Doom 3 was fun for me, I played it around Halloween that year, late at night, wearing my cans with the volume way up. It beat the hell out of the craptacular horror movie fest on TV, that is certain. The first couple of sessions were really good, the atmosphere, and zombie closets had me all itchy trigger fingered and antsy, which ain't normal for me and a vid game. I honestly think that some of the negative criticism of it at release was do to the hype around not only it, but the engine, and the fact that the Nvidia v. ATI war was raging at its highest, with Half-Life 2 in one camp-Doom 3 in the other.

Whatever, if they port to linux *pretty much a guarantee?* I'm on it.

I generally liked Doom 3. The combat started off slow but played more like a conventional FPS as the game went on, and the PDAs added a lot of a depth to an otherwise generic story. It wasn't "scary," but I don't find any game scary. The only thing I really disliked about it was the graphics engine and its fixed ticrate, and that applies to all games built on that engine.

I'd prefer a Quake 5 as well, but I'm assuming that Quake 5 will be next. (either that or the next Wolfenstien)

They haven't developed a good game since the original Doom
What about Quake? Return to Castle Wolfenstein? Did you not even like Doom 2?

Classic Doom mod is the best thing that happened to Doom3 and hopefully Id Software guys played the game. It translated classic doom game play into a new engine flawlessly.

Doom III could have been a fantastic game IF they developed the story a lot more, i enjoyed the first 10-15 minutes of the game a lot more than the rest of it. Also some teamwork like in half life 2 with alyx helping out and commenting on things would have gone a long way and there should have either been a flashlight on the end of most guns or just generally a brighter atmosphere. It had good environments, interesting stuff (hydrocon, and the other things) good weapons, very good monsters and bosses imo. But since it had that but lacked the other things i mentioned it was merely a pretty good game.

Im interested in doom IV, i really hope they take what people said about doom III in and make some changes with doom IV. As long as EA dosent publish it i think ill defintaley buy doom IV.

don't they also have that free Quake project coming up as well?

If you don't think Quake 1 and Quake 2 were good, they you aren't a real FPS fan - those games were monumental leaps, graphically, over anything seen previous to them, and the network code in Q1 was a dramatic leap forward...I'd count the clan battles I took part it as some of the best gaming experiences I've had....Rocket Arena, Painkeep, CTF....those were the days!

Quake Live, formally known as Quake Zero.

Quakeworld, once it was ironed out, had the best network code to ever grace the FPS genre.

I still haven't played Doom 3... When I tried the demo, it didn't work, and even now, it's still $30. And somehow I have doubts my rig will even run it. Here's hoping the PS3 version is a good port.

Speaking of flashlights in games, is there any shooting games that give you a flashlight and a gun in a crosshand hold? IE: handgun in right hand and flashlight in left hand crossed under the right hand?

BTW, I liked Doom3 and the exp, so I'm looking forward to this one.

Mesquite, Tex.-based id said Wednesday that production has begun on Doom 4, nearly four years after August 2004's Doom 3.

"Doom is part of the id Software DNA and demands the greatest talent and brightest minds in the industry to bring the next installment of our flagship franchise to Earth,? said id Software CEO Todd Hollenshead in a statement. ?It?s critical for id Software to have the best creative minds in-house to develop games that meet the standards synonymous with our titles.?

No other details on a release date or target platforms were available as of press time.

Oh hell yes! I know D3 is considered, by most, to be less than stellar. I agree actually with most of the critisizm in that it had its issues. However, I did find it enjoyable overall (I've beaten it twice infact.)

Seriously--how can you not be interested in what they're doing for D4. :D

Crazy! First screenshot has already been leaked:

Am I the only one who's confused as to why Carmack's new engine is being designed for outdated hardware (360, PS3, current-gen PCs)? I mean, he's taking the exact opposite approach that Crytek did.

Maybe he's hoping to beat the pirates! (Sorry) I'm kinda excited, I liked D3.

Yeah, I'm excited too, but I loved Carmack for his ability to make awesome looking engines. Unless he can pull of some crazy effects so far unseen in other engines, or build a modular engine that can be easilly upgraded for future tech, I think this one may be a dead end.

from what i understood when they first unveiled Rage/IdTech5, many assets will be universal across console/PC platforms, thus making development much easier. I thought ETQW looked good with megatextures, and Tech5 is supposed to expand upon that. I'm not terribly concerned over the graphics, although what they showed of Rage looked pretty good (different than Crysis or UT3, not necessarily better or worse).

OK, so, not only is it going to probably be pretty poor gameplay (Id ain't exactly gameplay gods anymore), but it will be console focused, and it won't even be a graphical showcase?
Cripes, did anyone buy D3 for reasons other then it's graphical showcase ability?

I liked doom 3. Now one of the main reasons I did enjoy it so much is that I played it slow. I didn't play 4 hours a day. I played like 4 hours a week maybe. I read all the pda's and my gf at the time watched me play because she likes scary movies and the game has a lot of boo moments. So under these conditions I really liked it. My nerves were shot from playing it, if I ran through for hours on end it would just make me mad and pissed off at it. I know boo moments are cheap but this game delivers them and they are kinda fun *if* you like that kind of thing. If you don't like it then I could see this game making you mad because it made you jump. The lack of a flashlight would anger people but it is there for the challenge. To make it scarier.
