Doom 3

Just had to say Doom 3 has me freaked out. I love horror movies and this is just as immersive as one. I am such a weenie I had to stop playing after while because I got too jumpy. Id did a great job in the first level with all radio communication from other marines after Hell literally broke loose. It was also fun seeing the gruesome end to the rude NPCs you see on the way to the missing scientist. That will learn them to be so unfriendly. The only thing I wish they would have done is let you know when you find a secret area like in the days of old.

Somebody hold me and reassure me it will be all right.

I know I'm a little late getting into this game, but I had bought it before my big upgrade, and I have vowed to finish it before picking up HL 2 and Far Cry.

I love Doom 3 and Half Life 2 for a lot for very different reasons.

People talk down on Doom 3, but for what I was, I thought that it was a great game. I'm trying to get through it on nightmare now.

I just finished it (on the lowest difficulty =( ) and found it to be the most frightening FPS I've ever played. Maybe somday I'll work up the courage to attempt nightmare =)

I'd highly reccomend Thief: Deadly Shadows. It's not all scary, but has one or two highly tense (scary...) areas.

Slow Zombies and monsters in hidden wall panels are not scary. Sorry Id.

Game's still good. I enjoyed it a bunch. I just don't find it scary.

Oh come on, you know you got a bit of a tingle when you heard/saw the spiders. The other things I can understand, but the spiders were creepy.

There were a few "gotcha!" jump moments, sure, but being surprised and being scared are two different things.

If you want the epitome of scary games, I don't think anything was more frightening during its heydey than Clive Barker's Undying. That game was genius. I wish it had done better at retail so they could've made a franchise out of it.

Being shocked/surprised is temporary. Fear is a persistent state.

I wish I would have bought that game (undying). I remeber playing the demo. I was walking down a dark corridor with a mirror at the end. I get up to the mirror and am looking into it, and I see some scary looking dude materialize behind me in the mirror. I whip around as fast as I can and he's not there. Nor is he in the mirror anymore. Freaked me out.

After a while the obviously scripted sequences no longer make you jump. The terrible lighting system doesn't help either. It was fun for about 15 minutes really.

Fatal Frames was the scariest game I ever played. I played it one day, and have never played it again. It's that damn scary.

I'm playing it the second time around on nightmare difficulty and I'm really enjoying it. It's definitely a solid game.

I played undying and doom3. I'll admit both were scary. Undying had nothing, NOTHING, on cherubs though. Doom3s sound and lighting plays a whole lot more on my nerves than undying did. Although there were a few scenes in undying that freaked me the hell out, like running down that cooridor full of windows with huge curtains. Seriously, Undying played on peoples fear of ghosts and haunted houses, Doom3 plays on peoples fear on things that go bump in the night.

I'll admit though, if they had skipped the slow moving zombies and sped up imps, Doom3 would have been too scary to play.

I was more persistently frightened to go around corners in Undying than Doom 3. In Doom 3, I KNEW what was coming next. I was going to go down a hall, and then some wall-closet panel was going to open up, or some demon was going to spawn behind me, or something else that had happened a million times already. Undying at least had variety wherein I didn't know what was going to come at me next.

Plus, Undying' monsters were far more dangerous to me, especially that damned one that could meld with the shadows in then disappear, only to materialize behind you, or the Howlers working as pack hunters to flank you or push you into a corner. Great stuff.

Plus, I was a HUGE fan of guns on one hand, magic in the other. That made for some of the best first person combat ever. I hate boss battles, and I found the boss battles in Undying rather fun.

It's a taste thing I guess, and I still enjoyed Doom 3 greatly - it's a very good game. But I'd rather have Undying if I'm looking for pure scares.

Ooh, I had forgotten about Undying. Luckily I still have a copy. I didn't get that far into it because I think something came out I thought was more fun. I may have to revisit this one. I remember using a device that let you see things "on the other side" and in this case it was various messages written on the walls in blood, which was kind of creepy. This game was highly underrated.
