Hey I am going to order this video card:

MSI nVIDIA GeForce FX 5900XT Video Card, 128MB DDR, DVI/VIVO, 8X AGP, Model "FX5900XT-VTD128" -RETAIL

And 2 sticks of this memory:

Kingston HyperX Series 184 Pin 512MB DDR PC-3700

How will Doom 3 run with these parts? Is it a good idea? My processor is an Athlon XP 2400+ ....nForce 2 mobo

get a 9800pro, and if you aren't overclocking, might as well get value ram insted.

If you are looking to save money do what they said. However that card is awesome especially if you use the VIVO (OCs to 450 850 (ultra Speeds with a little flickering)), however the 9800Pros are better overall. If you can afford the better RAM get ti but if your PC needs something else save and get that.

First of all, Doom III isn't that good of a game - except for the gfx. ;)

Secondly, if you are gonna only play doom to the exclusion of other games, your choice is good.

If you want a faster and "better" card for general gaming, the 9800pro for ~$180 is a better choice.

If you are looking for better still, be prepared to pay $250 for a standard 6800 or wait a couple of months for the 6600GT for ~$200.

And WHY PC3700? are you a serious o/c'er?
. . . imo it is overkill. The money you save on over PC3200 (or even PC3500) could get you a better video card. ;)

Well, I am not asking exclusively for Doom 3 but I figure if it can run that game smoothly then it can do the same for others. I am looking for an overall good gaming experience. I also enjoy Rise of Nations, Halo, NFS: Underground, Counterstrike, and many many games. I guess I just want to know if it is a good setup for gaming. I got the Z-680 speakers just to play my games but I need to upgrade my video card and memory because right now I have a GeForce 2 GTS and only 256MB 16x(16Mx8) DDR-SDRAM PC2100U-2533-750 (CL2.5 up to 133MHz)...which sucks. Thank you for all your feedback but I would like the big question to be answered...is this a good setup for a hardcore gamer?

I guess your definition of a hardcore gamer is different from mine because if I were a hardcore gamer I would get a 6800GT instead and also upgrade the processor and motherboard.

But if you just want to know if Doom 3 will run with your choice of a set up then the answer is yes, but don't expect anything above 800 x 600 at medium quality.

Should run ok,I was able to run it at 1024x768 and had to go to 800x600 res now and then when using my old XP 1700+/512mb PC2100 ram with 9700NP,used medium settings no AA,had AF on 16x performance setting,I`ve finished the game, yes Doom 3 was not a great game IMHO.
