No contest for me...Far Cry hands down. I beat Far Cry well before D3 was released and never went back to play Far Cray again, until last night. After completing Doom3 (and upgrading to a new video card), I figured that just for kicks, I'd throw in Far Cry to see how it looked on my new video card. 2 hours later I was still playing...lol. Playing that game again for a little while made me realize just how great it was and how much more I enjoyed it than D3. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed D3 and have no regrets for buying it the day it came out. But I never got the level of enjoyment from it that I did with Far Cry. I know they're totally different games but for me personally, Far Cry wins in a landslide. Game of the year if you ask me, simply because it carried zero hype, wasn't a much anticipated sequel and far exceeded my expectations. Didn't hurt that it only cost me like $36 at Sam's Club either. Multiplayer left a lot to be desired, but the same can be said about D3 and then some.
I think I can sum it up best by saying that with D3, I kept thinking "Man, will this game end already??!!" and with Far Cry I kept thinking "Man, I hope I'm not getting near the end yet!"
