Doom 3 Upgrade Dilemma...

Well I need to upgrade, primarily for Doom 3. The only problem is I can't decide how I should spend my money. Here are my current specs:

Asus A7V333 mobo
Barton 2500
1 GB Corsair XMS PC2700
Fx 5900xt
120 GB ATA 100

So I am trying to decide if I should buy a new mobo/cpu, or go with a 6800 GT. Can't do both, but which one would get me better D3 performance in the end? Also if I buy a new mobo, that means new RAM, how slow would it be if I ran my 333 RAM on one of the newer chipsets?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

your current system will play the game fine at 800*600 Medium settings and the game still looks beautiful...is it really worth the upgrade? to me no.

but if you wanted improvment for just Doom 3, the 6800 would get you better performance upgrade than a new processor/mobo.

The barton 2500+ will push a 6800 GT nicely

judging by the reviews the 6800 would probably be the better option but only if you intend to run at very high res.

Otherwise there really isn't much point as the nVidia cards are all good at Doom 3.

My advice would be to save those pennies and wait a while and you will then be able to do the whole system in one go.

Well, with the current setup it runs the game *ok* but I still get a lot of lag when getting into firefights. Playing now at 1024x768, Medium, no shadows. I guess I can turn it down to 800x600 and forego the upgrade. I really wish I could get it up to 1280x1024, since that's the native res for my LCD.. 🙁

Save your money. You'll need a system-wide upgrade in a year or two and by then 6800's will be ~$200 and you can pick up a 754 Sempron and accompanying MB for cheap.

see if you can flash to 5950 or at least O/C to 5900 ultra speeds. I have a 5900 NU and I run fine at 5950 speeds and the game runs great.

It's not worth upgarding for, so unless you just really want to anyhow, don't do it for Doom 3. It's a medocre game at best.
