And before someone mentions that movies only run at 24fps and TV at 29.97 fps, it's a very different situation.

When you pan a camera around really quickly, you get motion blur. If you're playing a game at 24 fps and you turn quickly, you get choppiness because you don't see what happened inbetween the 24 frames you saw that second.

Does this Showscan test aim to prove that 60 fields/pictures per second will basically saturate the average human's ability to perceive gaps in smooth motion? Because that's a different bag of worms than smooth motion in rendered images without motion blur.

Rollo, do you have a link to that Showscan test? Something more substantial than a link to a quote of a claim of proving 60fps is the average extent of human vision?

The inq is referring to Carmack's comments on the game tic, not capping FPS at 60hZ.

I suggest reading the thread at B3D to get a better understanding.

Man guys some of you just cant respect a diffrent opinion? Why is that I wonder...? Some say you can tell the diffrence and some say you cant but come on its not worth fighting about! I just happen to be in the group that can tell a noted diffrence in framerates\Refresh in all my first person shooters. And also use 85hrz and 85fps as a norm in every game that is a first person shooter. But for the guy that cant tell a diffrence @ 60hrz and 60fps more power to them it makes them that much easier to kill :p

EDIT :BTW its 1/200 of a second that pilots could not only see a target but identify its Model.........And that is a proven fact.

In the army my M.O.S was 14mike Stinger Man portable Anti Aircraft missles. We had to be able to identify, aim, acuate and then fire at jets flying @ Mac 1-3 and their are a few Jets that fly so fast that they can clear the skyline in 3 seconds......Horizen to Horizen mind you. As a final test to test your combate abilitys they fly a drone over your head @ 450mph but you cant fire until it clears your direct position....In otherwords until it flies over your head. Now out of a class of 60 they only let the most promising student fire. [Nope it wasnt me :(] and not only did he hit the target but he recited the seriel number off the side of the drone....crazy stuff since it was @ about 400ft up and was only 6 feet long. Food for thought.

Well I could visibly see the shell leaving the barrell of a 120mm (5") artilery cannon and that was travelling at circa 1500mph so I reckon on 250fps being an average top limit, but it all depends on direction of travel.
