DOOM 3: Requirements means Higher End Systems Only??

Hi Guys.

I just read an article, with some unbelievable news.

It seems that, the upcoming release of DoomIII, will only be for highend systems.

Does that mean, we all have to upgrade to min specs to play???

That's the only sensible thing you said.

Wait till it's out then we will see,games nowadays come out too early & patches always make it perform better after (as should from the beginning).

Update: After reading this information, we asked id software for confirmation and they have replied saying that the information that appeared in the article is totally false and a fabrication on the magazine's part.

It's pure BS.
 
Obviously a fabrication. Those specs list Pixel Shader 1.1. That's a direct X spec. This is an Open GL game.

I wish they would stop shipping games that take 4-6 cds on CDs. Use a DVD for chrissake. I mean, we don't ship games with 2500floppies because some people don't have CDroms.
Shipping on DVD exlusively could help curb piracy since not all people have DVD burners.
Incidentaly, this happened when CD games were first launched. Cd burners were rare.

Yup, I was excited when I heard Far Cry was to be DVD only, but that quickly turned to anger when they decided DVDs would only be available in Europe while the US would see 5 disc CD miniature collections. When a single scratch could render the whole game unusable, it'd not a wonder why people back up now more than ever. When a DVD drive costs less than a new game itself, people without DVD drives (and game publishers) have nothing to whine about.

Writable DVD drives are now sub-$100 so won't be much long b4 dvd (re)writing becomes commonplace

Yep. But they're not commonplace yet. Just like when CD burners weren't quite common yet.

Of course, the AVERAGE consumer doens't have much incentive to upgrade to a DVD burner. The drive to make a mixed CD appeals to a lot of people. not so much with movies. There are a lot of common users who barely can pirate software. This would make it that much prohibitive IMHO.
 
I hope they realize that one DVD is probably cheaper than three or four CDs. I'm going to buy the UT2004 Special Edition just because it's on a DVD (the free headset helps too).

Agreed. They should have switched to DVD a loooooong time ago. Next it'll be blu-ray discs or something. 😛
 
I could care less what kind of media the game is released on at this point. They just need to release the damned game already!
 
Great for all the TI users whom don't plan on upgrading for a while yet. 😀

On the DVD issue, oh god please make them release games on DVD. I just got Splinter Cell last week and finally got around to playing a game today. Very well made game and has a nice concept. Downer was another 3 CD's just like UT2003, frustrating as hell. Far Cry is a 5 CD collection? *raises brow*

people without DVD drives (and game publishers) have nothing to whine about.

john carmack told me to buy doom III and put it in a lock box not to be opened before the year 2020. By then we should have computers that will meet the minimum requirements to the play the game. Someone please post this stunning information on their gaming website so that others can plan appropriate hardware upgrades when the time comes.

Bah, I'm not worried about D3 all that much. I think it will play well on most systems. It's all the new games based on the new D3 engine that will follow shortly after it's release that really put your machine to the test.

Why release on DVD only and lose potential customers ?


Untill DVD burners have been 50$ for a while, there's no point

And it means that you DO care about something.

I couldn't care less may have been the actual phrase you were looking for, meaning you care the least amount possible about the medium, but do want the game.
There have been threads in OT about this.

And multi-CD games are excessive, most new games seem to come on 2 discs or more, it sucks. But it does mean easier backups can be made.
