Basically, I just wanna see some opinions. I've been reading from some other DOOM 3 forums, and a lot of times, the issue of the game being $54.99 came up. Lots of people complaining that it's expensive, and wondering why. So i'm wondering what you guys have to say. Some people have said that the reason why Id made Doom 3 cost $54.99 was because Id knew the game would be one of the most heavily pirated games, and they needed to make up for that large amount of lost money. That sounds plausible. or perhaps, Since the game was known prior to release that it'd have the expensive $54.99 price tag, maybe that might have encouraged even more people to pirate the game.

So assume that is true. Do you guys think it would have been a better choice to make Doom 3 cost say.. $24.99 (like the recent NFL2K5 for PS2/XBOX that costed $19.99 and is now being bought by every single PS2/XBOX owner). This is to battle the piracy issue. What do you think sounds like the better move.

A) More expensive price to compensate for lost money due to piracy?

B) Or a Cheaper more affordable price, $24.99, so that every single damn person on earth would buy the game, and perhaps not even bother to resort to piracy of DOOM 3.

just a thought that came to mind. If this is a repost issue. then ignore it. :)

I think they're doing it because they can. This isn't a sleeper hit that nobody knew was coming like Far Cry - this is one of the most anticipated games ever, with only Diablo 2 and Halflife 2 rivalling it in that department - and those are contenders only because a big chunk of the computer enthusiast community is too young to have played & loved Doom 1 & 2 extensively growing up ;) I think most pirates are going to do it either way, so I don't see a game's price affecting that too much. They're charging what they're charging because people will pay it. I do think it's quite high, however. I'm waiting on some reviews from ATers before I spend that much on a game.

I think $55 is VERY fair for this game. I'm having more fun playing it than I have had since I first started gaming.

Beyond that, if 24 hours is the time to finish, that's like 12 movies. Can you see 12 movies for $54.? No.

That doesn't even take multiplayer into account.

Well, as for the issue of the price being high, I think yes, it's a tad expensive. BUT, I compare this only to the price of all other games, and $5 isn't really that big of an issue. As for why it's $54.99, I don't know if it's a piracy thing or not, but I believe id has added the extra $5 simply because it will not matter. They'll sell 2 million copies of this game before the price drops on it, and that alone will net them an extra $10 million. You do have to remember the game has been in development for 4 years, so they may also be trying to recoup some extra development costs. Blizzard did the same thing with Warcraft III, and released it at $59.99 if I'm not mistaken (yes, I remember WalMart having it for $57). The price dropped to $50 roughly 1-2 months after release.

As for a cheaper price being more effective? I don't think that'd work with this game. Doom 3 has passed the hype machine and has become what I think is the most sought after PC game ever. People are going ape sh!t over getting this game the past few days, so I believe many are pirating it simply because it's available. Even if it were $25, I believe many would still be downloading it.

All just my opinion :).

C'mon guys. Its only 5 dollars more than most other tier1 games debut for. Normal is 49.99. 5 bucks extra for a game that took 4+ years to develope. Thats a bargain to me.

they'll keep it at 54.99 for a week or two, then you'll see the price hit 49.99. the extra five bucks a copy brings in a killing though on a game like this because its going to sell gangbusters the first week.

they'll make a second wave of income once word of mouth gets around to the casual gamers. At that point, the game will probably be in the 40-45 dollar range. this game is going to have some legs.

I think it's expensive. I'm not buying at that price. I'll simply wait until price comes down to where I'm comfortable spending.

If you don't like the price, you have the choice not to buy it. Simple as that. If enough people do the same, price is going to fall. But Doom3 is going to sell no matter what.

I've too many unfinished games and not enough time to game. Hopefully by the time I clear some of the backlog, Doom3 will have come down to my price range of $30.

I think the added time in development warrants an increase in price.
Besides, from what I have heard from the BestBuy leaked copies, this game is the best.
Evar.

I'm sure everyone here has bought at least one game they wish they never bought... just think of the extra $5 to be insurance that the game is going to roxxor your soxxors.

Why not get it for $40 and really get your money's worth?

Buy it from Best Buy tomorrow, play it for 3 days, then drive back to BB and price match it to Circuit City on Friday when CC has it in stock(required for price match), then you get it for $45 with an extra 10% off for doing the match. Heck of a deal then, eh?

Just got back from BB, I used the CircuitCity $45 DOOMIII ad, and they honored it. But I was smart, I paid $55 for it at the register, then walked over to an empty customer service line, showed them the ad, then got 10% back from the difference, $44 baby! :p CANT WAIT TO PLAY IT!!! :D

If that's the case then Duke Nukem Forever should be $150+ :D

I believe Activision sets the pricing, not id. Recent interviews of the id crew seem to indicate that Activision si looking to break the bank on D3.

The ESPN NFL2k5 isn't priced that low to battle piracy it is priced that low as an extreme marketing move in an effort to expand it's fan base against Madden. For sports games that get updated every year it pays to keep people loyal to your series. @ $19.99 I'd be surprised if Sega is doing anything more than breaking even. But if they win over some converts and more people buy NFL2k6 @ $49.99 then the long term gain will offset the short term loss.
