I still have Doom 3 on disk...

Do I have to play it thru Steam?

Is there a patch that will give it the improved graphics of Doom 3 BFG?
 
[H]ard forums has a great post on mods/config settings to play Doom3 original on today's PCs.

If you want a more seamless experience, DOOM BFG edition on steam is easy as pie (doom3/doom1/2 ported to IDTech 5) and allows for curent days pc's and resolutions.
