I like to think I'm decent at FPS games, but I could quite possibly suck and just not realize it. One thing I just can't seem to decide on, though, is a control setup. Maybe you could all tell me yours, or sugest some, or whatever.

This is specifically for Doom 3, but with the exception of a flashlight and run button, could apply to any FPS I play.

Movement: WASD obviously
Fire: Left Mouse
Jump: Right Mouse
Crouch: Space
Weapon select: Mouse Wheel
Reload: "Forward" button on Mouse
Flashlight: "Back" button on Mouse
Run: Shift

I'd prefer using something on the mouse to Run, but I don't know which of the things I have on the mouse to give up. I guess the reloading could be put back to R, but the Forward Mouse button seems to awkwardly placed to be the type of button that I would hold down for an extended period of time. Maybe I could make it the Back button and put the Flashlight back on F, or move it to Forward Mouse? I can't decide/figure it out. :(

Suggestions aplenty please.

I've got a Logitech MX mouse and I really find it hard to use more than 4 buttons on ANY mouse I use. Alot of that goes back to my early FPS days when mice only had 2, maybe 3 buttons. I've got pretty much all the keys around WSAD mapped to something.

I don't have D3 yet, but this my general FPS setup:

Movement: WSAD
Fire: L.mouse
Alt.Fire: R.mouse
Jump: Space
Crouch: L.Ctrl (sometimes C)
Run: L.Shift
Reload: R
Use/Open: E
Switch Weapons: Mousewheel (and usually the row of numeric keys)

This leaves the Q, F, V, C, Z and X keys free for other things.

So D3 doesn't have an alternate fire mode? Then I would probably use the R.mouse button to switch between the flashlight and weapons, since you use that so frequently.

My setup is exactly like yours, except that I've decided to use right mouse button for zooming in Doom 3. Otherwise I will likely use it for alternate fire (which isn't used by Doom 3)

I personally used ESDF; it opens up QAZ as available keys for other things.

My multiplayer controls in something like UT2004 are a lot different than my Doom3 controls.

No flashlight on the mouse, heh.

You can't go wrong with this setup. Mouse5 is a thumb button on my mx700

That's pretty unique. What do you move forward with?

Opps, forgot to put that in there and did goof on one and show the change in bold.

Move forward: Left Mouse
Movement: ASD - strafe left/back/strafe right
Fire: right Mouse
Jump: W
Crouch: It used to be X but moved to Left-Alt in BF1942
Weapon select: Mouse Wheel
Reload: R
Flashlight: F
Run: Shift
Use: E
If there are lean buttons I use Q/E and move the use to F or else where, really depending on the game and if I doing Single player or multiplayer.
For special shots or to zoom in with a sniper gun, I use space bar.

The left or right mouse button can be changed to your liking of couse, move with the right, shoot with the left.

When I played BF-1942, the vehicle (tank/jeep) forward was W but for infantry part it was very close to the above. Reason I don't like FPS move forard W is I like to keep the left hand free to do other more important things, like strafing and switching to a better weapon if needed while strafing. Now the scroll button on the mouse can also be used to switch weapons, but sometimes you need the correct weapon right away and with an extra finger free to hit that number button (as long as it on 7-0 buttons)

For example when I played Half-Life the weapons were pretty much 1-4 (or something close to that) that brought up a sub-menu to other weapons which was also 1-4 there abouts. So if the two fingers are occupied with (forward/back) & (strafe) it would be hard to switch over to more of a correct weapon for the situation than using a mouse scroll button.

A lot of that is just in my opinion, I have no doubt there are people that can use the mouse scroll to switch weapons more accurate than I can.

I'm seriously weird (probably from other people's point of view).

F/B/L/R - Arrow keys
Fire: Left Mouse (R Mouse with alt fire, or iron sights in those games)
Jump: RShift
Crouch: R Ctrl
Weapon select: Mouse Wheel
Reload: Middle mouse or kpad Insert
Flashlight: Delete
Run: KPad Pgdwn
Use: Enter

Leaves the function button, #, end, pagedown (not keybpad one), kpad end, kpad down, kpad left, page up, home, insert and backspace as useable keys, and at a push, / and [ ]
I have quite large hands though, which may have something to do with it.

I find the default HL config to be the best for all FPS. In D3, MOUSE2 is used for Zoom, and CTRL is crouch, otherwise its the default config. One thing I can stand are guys who need to config their controls for like 10 minutes before playing, especially if we happen to be taking turns! At least I can just revert to defaults and be up an running in no time.

That's weird! My setup is the same as both of yours! :Q
