Doom 3 Expansion $24 + VERY SHADY store policy at Best Buy

Saw the original post, but I thought hell with that, mines has more content 😛

The hot deal:
So Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil is on sale at Fry's Electronics for 23.99 (or 24.99 at Circuit City if you don't have a Fry's).

The shadiness:
Now, I couldn't make it to Fry's this afternoon and went to a nearby Best Buy instead. They had it for 29.99, so I had Customer Service pricematch to 23.99, but they DID NOT give the extra 10% as per their policy.

Here is their policy for the lazy:
Store Price Guarantee
If, within 30 days (14 days for computers, monitors, printers and notebooks, camcorders, digital cameras and radar detectors) of your purchase from Best Buy, you find a local competitor offering a lower price on an available product of the same brand and model, we'll refund the difference plus another 10% of the difference. Bring us verification of the lower price, plus your original Best Buy receipt to claim your refund. Does not apply to BestBuy.com pricing, special, bonus or free offers, and in California cellular phones and pagers. Does not apply to products with special financing offers. For complete price guarantee details, please see a customer service representative. We reserve the right to limit quantities. See store for complete details.

Not wanting to make a big deal out of sixty cents, I accepted it. Afterwards, I asked the service rep why they wouldn't add in the extra 10%. She replied, "The only way we can give you the extra 10% difference is if you were to buy the exact same item at another store, then bring it to our store and show it to us."

😕

So she meant that I would have to buy Doom 3 first at Best Buy, then go to Fry's and buy it, then come back to Best Buy to price match. Of course, then I just had to ask, "Then what am I supposed to do with two copies of the game?" She replied, "Just go back to Fry's and return their copy."

Epilogue:
Upon leaving Best Buy, I could not think for the life of me how their Store Policy could be interpreted in this manner. Just imagine if the Supreme Court were allowed to interpret The Constitution like Best Buy! *shudder*

Guess who's not going back to Best Buy again? :disgust:

I havne't been able to get Worst Buy to PM that 10% difference the promised whenever I PM with them. They suck.

That's another reason why I rarely shop at BB.

Their PM policy is retarded. One guy told me that in order to get the 10 percent difference, I'd first have to buy the product. And then if I later found the item for less and came back for the PM, they'd then give me the 10 percent difference too. But not when they just do a PM.

What difference does it make whether I buy the item and then I find a lower price or if I just buy the item with the PM straight out?

What I do now is buy item, walk out, turn around and then go get PM plus 10 percent difference. But only if it's really really a good deal. Otherwise, I just shop a Circuit City, Staples, etc. instead.

you need to check out at customer service. 90% of the time if you tell them you want the price match and 10% they will give it to you.

If they are being a real pain, you have to buy it first and then get them to price match it. that will get you the 10% discount.

yes, their policy is lame, but when you add the rewards incentive and price matching its worth it.

the policy that really sucks is that they don't like to price match fry's 1 day and 3 day ads..

These policies are so strict these days, it's like a burden to them to compete 😱 But the policy you quoted does pretty clearly state the 10% difference is given when you buy something from them, and *then* find it at a lower price. Supposed to make you feel warm and fuzzy about not shopping around before walking in and buying I guess.

Military stores (exchanges) used to do the +10% difference also...that lasted less than a year!

Reward program is the sh1znat. I buy about 80% of my work's 'supplies' from Worst Buy and make some serious bonus bucks from it.

As per their policy, it states that they won't do it on a "special" or "bonus" offer.. That is somewhat ambigious as anything on sale could be considered a special offer, which I think is a much more valid excuse to not give you your 10% back (or possibly even PM in that case) then lack of definitive proof (such as the actual copy of the game and receipt as opposed to - I'm guessing - the sales paper for PM). The Constitution is interperted in a similiar fashion, think of it like this: you think that someone or something has violated right X, you bring it into court saying right X has been violated and you would like things rectified (say PM + maybe 10%), so the system would look for any precidents regarding your situation (like checking the Circuit City sales paper), if they are found and your case is found to be the same, you are rewarded your PM (and maybe 10%). Of course, it is a lot more involved than that, but making an analogy to what you believe you rights to be and a store price matching policy is a little hard/silly. 🙂 btw, don't mind me, I'm just killing some time while I think of the best way to write a new, fun, query.

it depends on the CSR, I tried to do the same thing before with doom3, one CSR wouldnt do it, so I went to another best buy (i just happened to be in the area) and that one took the 10% off no questions asked.

Ahh grasshopper.

Go to your store of choice and take the label off the shelf that shows the price.

Failing that, buy it and then immediately walk to the service desk and tell them you changed your mind.

You'll have your receipt, or even better, the actual price tag from the shelf of items.

The way I was able to price match at BB & get the extra 10% was;
Put flyer from other store in pocket,
Buy item at BB
After purchase walk over to service (??) counter
Ask for price match with extra 10%

And the best part is, it works 10% of the time

man o man

I have a BB very close to my house and yes the policies they have suck but I used to work there so I know how bad they actually suck and what has to be done to get around them. I also have problems with the extra 10% but I don't care. The Fry's is 45 minutes away and $5 in gas so I don't care when I don't get the extra 60 cents. BB can be used for some very good deals and I have had a great deal of luck with PM and the $5 game card coupon. BB is close and I always make at least a good deal, maybe not great but you win some and you loose some. In the end I get something and I go home happy.

Nick

I just eff them any chance I get.

not too many chances, but when they're there. BAM.
eff em.

So how true do you guys think the saying still is? "the customer is always right"?

Thats exactly what they want you to do. Those "really really" good deals, are not the bad from their point of view either.

So they nickle and dime shaft you over and over but when a high margin product comes around you still go back.

I know that anymore this is what passes for "voting with your wallet" but it really makes little or no difference. If you really want to show them its BS DONT GO BACK, at all, ever, no matter how good a deal it is, stay away.

Anything else is not going to have enough of an impact for them to care.

Foot traffic goes down they KNOW it, they sweat it, they change their ways to fix it.

Hell, you have to watch those clowns just to make sure they don't charge you more than the sale price--it happened to me twice in just a few months.

First was a PS2 for my daughter--they were running a sale at the store even when these were a hot item. We got about half way home and I started adding up the price and tax in my head and it didn't jive. Got the recipt out and yep, charged full price not sale price--back to the store for the difference.

Bought a Nikon Coolpix 8700 at BB only because my wife had several hundred $$ in BB gift coupon cards that she won from her work place. Best Buy had the 8700 on sale on their web site so I asked the clerk at the store if they matched their web site price. He said yes so off we went to the register to check out. The gal at the register started scanning all the gift cards and I realized about half way through that something wasn't right. I asked her what the price was and sure enough I was charged full price instead of matching the web site price.

I'm telling you,if you buy something on sale make DAMN sure they ring up the sale price. I'm about ready to call the DA's office on them.....

most definitly they make cash of the ignorant. I will not shop in electronics areas I don't know alot about (i only go in computers, car audio) because I have heard some of the total inane crap they spout in the computer section.

EDIT: read the story in the link above this link, very eye opening. Makes me want to screw BB!

Welcome to the club. May your membership be long lasting.

Btw, my "last straw" Worst Buy moment came recently too. They had Klipsch Pro Media 5.1 speakers on their website for $349, not as good as Newegg, but decent and I could take them home that day. The website confirmed they had the item in stock, in my local B&M BB.

I go down there and the price on the shelf was $355 (instead of $349). In fact, after looking around, I noticed most items were marked above MSRP. The Logitech MX1000 was $82 instead of $79, for example.

I got the attention of a drone, and told him I'd like these speakers, but could they please match their website's listed price of $349.

"No"

"huh? you won't match your OWN website's price?"

"No, we don't do that. They're a different store"

after a bit, I had him go check with his manager, and he came back and repeated the same thing, and told me it was "corporate's rules" -- they wouldn't match.

Dumbfounded, I asked him if he realized that I could go to any web terminal, order the speakers ON THE WEBSITE THAT HE WON'T MATCH, and have it made ready for IN-STORE PICKUP.

"well, yeah, I suppose you could probably get away with that"

("get away" with it??)

My god. It was all I could do to keep from screaming how freaking idiotic they were. I told him to tell his boss and 'corporate' too, that they just lost me for life over $5.
