Doom 3 "Evil"?

Two things - either your parents are grasping for control because they see you're getting older and don't want to lose the last bits of it they have
OR
they saw something on the news/media and they leapt to conclusions

Or it's a mix of both.

I hate parents like that...It is a video game, if they cannot see past that, then they have their own problems to deal with. I'm not very religious, but i have religious friends, and im no atheist. Of course, it depends on your faith, im methodist, and i can't stand the catholic faith, for reasons we wont get into here, as this is not about which religion is better...its about whether or not a video game is "evil"

did you ever play diablo II? I'm guessing no....but there are a VAST majority of games that creatures come from hell and you kill em off... Keep us up to date!

EDIT I too liked that pac-man quote...that rules, i think i'll put it on the side of my MAME cabinet when i finally get around to it!

doom 3 is run by the devil. and i owns!!! too bad it doesn't have decent multiplayer..cs:s will get everyone'e attention now. but the single player exeperience is ownij.

It sounds to me that perhaps their information concerning the game is coming from a somewhat biased source that has not evaluated the game itself. Sure, it has demons. So does the Bible. Sure, it has explicit violence. So does the Bible. Sure, it can be reptitive. So can the Bible. The pivoting factor in all of this is that in playing the game, your role is to combat evil, and from a moral perspective it's in line with the Bible in that good does not align itself with the Hellspawn demonic legions. If they want to be legalistic about the portrails and accuracy, remind then that it is a fictional game and if they are still concerned, tell them where to go (albeit politely if you value free rent).

My 2¢.

Well, thanks... I don't know that they'd mind multi... I think if you could turn off gore some how they'd maybe care a little less. I just wish I saw their logic. I mean, how many games have we had now where we kill zombies? Eh...

You don't see their "logic" because there is no "logic" behind their actions. Simply a form of xenophobia, neuroticism, and a tendency to call something "evil" when you don't understand it, or don't want to take the effort to understand it.

your 18.... but you still live with your parents. In their house you follow their rules. This is the Christian response anyway. Honor thy mother and father. If you have some different views than your parents, and it is bugging you, first thing to do is talk to them. If it is really bugging you, move out.

so why again do they think this game has anything to do with the unleashing of hell? oh, you told them. 😱

this is an easy matter. only play at the hours between 12-2am. Oh yeah, play the Megadeth song 'Good Mourning/Black Friday' repeatedly in the background. If you are truly strong this won't turn you into a possessed murderer.

Listening to Marilyn Manson would also help/

What about multiplayer then? No satan spawn there.

Also, I'm impressed at the way you respect your parents.

Stop looking for logic in a religious argument. Tell them that Doom 3 is your anti-drug. Having been completly swayed by that propaganda they might just explode.

It is a pretty evil game. 🙂 My mom and dad didn't let me play the original Doom back when it came out either, It was their house, and their computer so I respected their wishes. Now I'm married and live on my own and play whatever I want. 🙂

Im convinced. Doom 3 is the new bible. The ten comandments of doom 3:

1. Thow shalt get the sh!tith skerred out of thow
2. Thow shalt not complain about thine flashlight
3. Thow shalt always stay alert.
4. Thow shalt listen to teh sp00kerness effects
5. Thow shalt rob corpses portable computers.
6. Thow shalt shite themselves when 7 imps attack (with thine firey palms of fury)
7. Thow shalt save often as to minimalizing overplaying the same shalt over and over again.
8. Thow shalt try to come up with more witty replies to defendith the book of DOOM.
9. Thow cant think of anything more
10. Thow shalt kill teh sp!d4r5!

They are a perfect example of why this country is so fuct up. Do they work for the FCC by chance?

The game may promote evil. When someone sits in front of a game so captivating to the imagination, they sometimes want to be a part of that world. Imagination is a dangerous tool of the human psyche. You in a sense feel like a god in your own little world. Some people with mental issues, like your parents, may have a hard time breaking out of that world. Why would they want to give up a world were they have complete control over? It's a form of schizophrenia. Most serial killers thought they were gods too.

The next thing we need is another guy thinking he's really killing deamons even though their just people.

*sigh* Religion sucks. I don't know what else to say. I feel badly that you're being restricted from a great experience because half the world is insane.

If you can't differentiate between a game and reality than there is a problem. That part is concrete. The argument should not go past that.

"Mom, Dad, do you guys understand the difference between a game and reality?"

I don't leap on mushrooms and turtles, I don't steal cars, I don't snipe people with an AWP, I don't knock people out and steal their clothes, I don't dress up in medeival outfits and try to slay people dressed up as ogres (...), and I don't plan to build a BFG and try to kill a demon .... if you could even find one.

I mean, yea, at the end of their day it is their house. I'd hate to get kicked out of the house for playing Doom3, but if it came to that, cya mom and dad.

Yeah, I'm afraid I'd have to agree that they're way out in left field on this one...

BatmanNate - very intelligent arguements.

I talked to my mom a little more (as she's a bit less stubborn than my father) and she seemed to understand where I was comin' from a tish more so after a while. I've got no intent on deleting Doom3, not after 4 years of waiting, heh, not to mention I just bought one of them Klipsch ProMedia 5.1 deals mostly for this game... (stereo wouldn't do it any longer...).

I've been playin' it for a while this mornin', some mighty fun stuff. With regards to the MP though, I must say I like these tight little matches (if you can ever find an open/non password server, geesh). But maybe that's just me.

Oh, and yes my folks have seen LoTR, that was something I brought up with them as well: ultimate good vs. evil kinda thing.

You gotta love those Whacky Fund A Mental Cases..actually you don't but unfortunately they aren't going away.

I must say, that's pretty childish of your folks. If they don't trust you (or themselves) to distinguish between fantasy and reality, how are they going to live in the real world? How do they handle horror movies? Ghost stories?

I'd say the pentagrams and gutted people hanging over alters are pretty evil. I see where your parents are coming from being raised Catholic myself. I still think they need to get a grip. It's just a game.
