I had to uninstall clonecd for it to work.
That is pretty lame if you ask me...
Very lame. This is just another example of how "downloaders" make things so much harder on thouse of us who actually buy games.
"Downloaders" didn't add that restriction on your freedoms into iD's game code. iD added those things. So don't blame "downloaders", blame iD.
I don't see how that actually prevents copying the game, since even if you don't play it, you can still just use CloneCD (or whatever else) to dupe the disc. (Theoretically speaking, I haven't tried it, nor know what other copy-protection it has.)
All it does is block legitimate purchasers, and legitimate users of CD-duplication software, from enjoying their newly-purchased game. Very poor form from Activision and iD.
Copy-protection on games, back in the floppy-disk era, died out, finally, because publishers saw that they were inconveniencing their legitimate purchasers more than they were the pirates, who would just patch the code anyways. There's no difference in the situation today, really, other than publishers have become big, fat, greedy, and stupid. Maybe this all runs in cycles, who knows. But if you want to avoid being inconvenienced, I'm sure that patches will appear in your nearest warez channel. Kudos for Activision for leading customers to learn all about "piracy" and "patches" and "hacks" and "cracks" and "warez". Sooner or later, their customers will start looking there first for games, instead of on the store shelves. And thus, the cycle starts anew, except that Activision and iD are actively helping the "other side" to succeed, with these asinine copy-protection policy restrictions that make no sense.
