I was told that one can download a DVD copy of doom3. Does this mean there is going to be a DVD edition released soon?

I would much rather buy a DVD edition.

I read it a couple of weeks ago, but someone from id software said that there would not be a dvd version because of the cost of authoring.

EDIT - Here's the link.

The game will ship on either three or four CDs. Despite the hopes of hard-core gamers, though, there will not be a DVD version of the game, id Software CEO Todd Hollenshead told CNN/Money.

"There's just not a compelling reason," he said, taking a break from a company celebration.

"I know some gamers are hoping to use the DVD players on their machines for something other than watching movies, but there are downsides," he said. "For us the cost of the goods and the cost of the replication and having to make two masters just isn't worth it."

Why? lol, its not like the performance is any better (although I do own the unreal 2k4 DVD edition, and it streamlines the install. a bit, JUST A BIT ;))

Because after years of gaming multiple CD games are beginning to take up a retarded amount of space. So, now I get a DVD version whenever I can.

Here's an idea for John Carmack to do to get enough money to ship it out on DVD, sell one of his cars. That should cover the cost and shipping of a few dvd copies at least, right?

.... Are you retarded? Why would a company take a loss.... for any reason? Companies don't take losses. That's not smart business. I sure the hell would sell one of my cars so you could have a DVD version. ESPECIALLY seeing as how you'll only ever need to use 1 CD after the install.

Actually companies frequently take losses on products, especially when introducing something new. I believe Microsoft lost a between $100 and $200 on each XBOX they sold at launch time. What they lose in initial profit, however, they more than make up for in market share, etc. Probably not the same with a new game, but still.

I think he meant that it's not smart for a company to take a lose on purpose, like id would if they released it on DVD.

Eh? I don't get what you're trying to say.
You would sell one of your cars so he could have a DVD version? WOW! You're generous man.

Epic/Atari managed to get a DVD and CD version out, and the game was a HELL of a lot cheaper (and THEN there was the UT2k3 rebate) than Doom 3.
So why are id bitching? Epic managed to offer a game for less $$$ with both CD and DVD editions. (Yes, that takes into account cost of authoring, maybe not the money they need to make on the endgine development, but they know they will make that back anyway, especially with licensing and Quake 4).

The world is heading towards DVD, more people should try and encourage the move. Outcast was released many years ago and they made a DVD version of it, this was back when DVD players were nowhere near as common or cheap as they are now, and it was not a high selling game. They still did it, so obviously it was acceptable to the devs/publishers then.
