Doom 2 LAN Game

Hi,

I need help with getting two computers to be able to connect on a LAN. I have Doom 2 on both my eMac and my G4. I dont know how to get it to play over the LAN. Here is what I am doing.

I first go to options. Then I go to Server Options. For the Master Server, I type in the eMac's IP address on both the eMac and the G4. (192.168.0.4) I then type in a server name, (i.e. Mac) Then, it asks if I want an internet server. I put Yes. Then, I go to multiplayer. I go to Connect Server, and for "Search on" I put Local LAN. I then go to Start Server, and put the same exact settings for both computers. I start the server first on the eMac, and then on the G4. On the eMac, I get the error "Connexion to Master Server Failed." I cant get the 2 to connect so we can play a game over a LAN.

What in the world am I doing wrong? I know I must be doing something wrong. Please help.

Thanks!

wow, its been a long time since I've played doom2 (might try software forum)

is there an option for "find local servers" or "specify server" you can specify the game server you like by IP address.

the server only needs to be run on one machine.

Hi,

There isnt a an option for find local servers or specify server. I can just type in the name of the server, and put the IP address for the master server. If I want the eMac as the master server, do I type the eMac's IP address on the eMac or on the G4?

On the G4. Then the G4 will know where to look for the server.

Ok thanks. 🙂

Just tried connecting, and it didnt work. Another question. Should both computers have the same server name? I put the same server name on both computers.

What Doom variant are you playing?
The original Dooms didn't have IP support, they used IPX.

What do you mean by Doom variant? Can you rephrase that? Sorry, I feel like such an idiot. 😛

What is IPX?

IPX is an old Novell protocol that isn't used much these days.
There are many Doom "variants", they sprung up after the source was released, jDoom being the most well known one.
They added among other things, IP play for upwards of 16-32 players, possibly more.

The "vanilla" Doom of -93 won't play using IP, doesn't have master servers, etc.
The first version to support IP was Doom95 AFAIK, little more than a Win32 port of Doom.

How do I use IPX? Am I supposed to download it? Is the Novell Protocol free?
My version of Doom 2 can support up to 32 players.
I think I have 2 Doom variants. I think they are. One is called Doom Plutonia and the other is Doom TNT.

Ok, I am now using Doom TNT. I am able to connect to the eMac for a LAN game, but there is one problem. Once the G4 joins, it is immediatly kicked out. An error on the top of the screen on the eMac says "Player 2 has been kicked Consistency Failure3" What does this mean?

You're probably using some later version then.
Can you select stuff like different resolutions? Change keyboard configs and join/host games from within the game(as opposed to quiting and launching setup)?

Anyway, Plutonia/TNT is an expansionpack, same as Ultimate Doom for Doom I, it'll work with any newer Doom version that I know of.
Try to find out which version of Doom you're using, and of course, make sure you're using the same on both computers.

I belive Doom Legacy runs on OS X, have a look and see if it looks familiar here.

I cant change the resolutions. I can do the other things though. I am using the same Doom version on both computers. I had Doom TNT on cd, and I copied it to both computers.

I am using Doom Legacy on Mac OS X.

I just read that if you get that Consistency Failure error, you need to change the number of Tic Dupes in the network driver. What in the world are Tic Dupes, and how do I change the number of them?

No idea, I usually just play jDoom, another version that AFAIK only runs under Win32.
But at least now you have a place to look for information, that's a good start 🙂

Hey thanks for your help Sunner. I gave up on Doom. Too much of a hassle to get it to work properly. I just decided to get Unreal Tournament 2003 for both Macs. Placing the order today. I bet this will be a whole lot easier than Doom. 🙂

Thanks for taking the time to help me out Sunner! 🙂

Happy to help 🙂

If you still wanna play it(and I don't blame you in case you do 😉), check out Newdoom.
Lots of New Doom(surprise eh?) info there 🙂
