How does the dough part compare to doughnut dough? They basically look like doughnuts with a filling where the hole should be, something I have had many times.
We get them every year at work, i've yet to have ones that are better than a decent donut

pączki are OK but i think the jelly is a bit heavy, and given the choice i'll just take a regular glazed donut

my great grandma was born in poland but moved here when she was young, and she wasn't really a fan of them either

Reminds me of that bit during Denis Leary's No Cure for Cancer stand-up... "I don't trust people who put things inside of donuts. "Well it's only hot blueberry sauce..." It could be hot French semen for all I know."

hard call because you got donuts in the US, and whatever those things are called everywhere else, and some are quite delicious. We have a thing called Bigne' di San Giuseppe, this one here:

which are so good, you can positively die from happiness if you eat more than one. They are also massive and waaay too full of delicious cream.

So .. thing is, they only come 'round once a year, for a short holiday, while you can have donuts every day of the year. Also, i must confess, i am a fool for Dunkin's doughnuts. Which is the one time only in my entire life that i will spell it that way, because real men know they are called DONUTS.

I saw a movie about how they make those.
It's called Van Wilder.

Well, to comment on some of the Paczki:

Classic feelings are: Plum butter (yum!), rose jam (super yum!!!) and might be actually any fruit jam.

Stuff like pudding, chocolate, creams are fairly recent additions.

Per Mom and Grandma - real stuff is fried in real (that you keep in fridge) LARD which brings very unique and delicious taste to the dough. Many nationalities do use LARD as frying agent. Also, true and excellently done piece has lighter rim around its outer edge.

Last thing, frying does kill most of filling's flavor, especially the fruity ones. I've seen many joints stuffing the filling after the dough has been fried.

Powdered sugar or icing on top.
