Don't you hate it when people write in such a way that they try to make what they are saying sound big and important?

It really pisses me off and ALL of my sociology texts are like this.

The authors will use like 200 words to describe something, that could have been written with 75-100. It seems like they use a bunch of filler to make it look like their articles have more content than they really do and just makes reading a PITA.

That is why I attempt to write like a 6th grader. It takes skill to write something that anyone can understand. There was a good famous quote about it. I don't remember it all, so let me shorten it:

A dumb person uses/understands only short words and simple sentences.
A smart person uses only long words and complex sentences.
A genius understands long words and complex sentences but chooses not to use them.

Makes sense :)

I think there was something similar in regards to what people talk about:

Dumb people talk about other people.
Average people dicuss events.
Smart people discuss ideas.

The easier a map (or set of construction drawings or similar) is to read, the harder it was to make.

Read anything written by a high-ranking educator - it's totally incomprehensible.

This is not always true. Sometimes it takes more than a series of simple sentences to describe something accurately. Try taking a higher level religion or philosophy course.

Few rules-of-thumb are always true. However, the spirit of that rule remains. When multiple acceptable options exist, the most simple option is the best option. Sometimes you need a complex sentence to be accurate. That doesn't mean that the rest of your entire text must be complex.

True enough, with the exception of resumes ;)

You would really hate working where I do. EVERYTHING is written that way, and people like to meet to plan meetings. I'd swear people were getting paid by the word if I didn't know they were on the government service scale.

It makes me not want to work with civilians...

yea when people bloat their writing with unecessary junk its certainly not for your benifit. it just says something about the writer, and its not what they think it is.

(occam's razor - for a certain phenomenon, choose the simplest explanation/rule/formula that describe it completely and correctly). (or keep it simple stupid)

Yes, the obfuscation of that indelible diatribe is just blatantly gregarious.

out of context....just LOL.

EDIT: and to give my post a bit of relvancy to the subject, it depends. Sometimes complex word are need to give an acurate and complete view of the subject. You aren't going to describe how perform brain surgery with "Well, first you cut the brain on the round thingy here, and then you kinda pull it open and take out the weird lookin' thing."

One of the hardest exercises my wife had to do while in Pharmacy school was write at a 6th grade level for her patient consultations and perscription consultations.

She hated it. It's hard being taught by, and having to write for PhD's and then turn around and retool yourself to talk to a 10 year old.

:)

This perfectly describes a professor written "textbook" we have to use for a theory of computation class... just plain bad and so much notation you lose the idea of what you're trying to learn in the first place.
