Don't you hate it when people just "drop" off their computer so you can fix it? This dumbass friend of my dads calls me over and said his internet is not working...i go check it works fine, he says wtf are all these windows, im like their popups, if you goto shitty websites and let porn take over ur computer, you will get them a lot. So i install a popupkiller program for him everything is fine, i tested it. Calls me next day and says popups are back!...whoopty freakin do howed u do that?, then he says "forget everything, just format and reinstall windows for me" ok genius, i have all the time in the world. Dude jus drops by rite now, dosent come in to talk to me (to be nice) and gives my dad the computer and leaves. I hate assholes. (Also this is like the 30th time this has happend with him)

Drop the computer in the trash can, and when he comes back say "Thanks for the consideration that I might want a free computer, but it was broken or something, had all these wierd popup windows on it, so I threw it away"

He'll never ask you for help again.

fix it and give him an invoice for like $40 or so.

when he says, "you didn't tell me you were gonna charge me.", you say "you didn't ask"

Just run Adaware and spybot search and destroy to kill any spyware and say you reformatted it. That would be generous.

Open machine up.

Take a crap inside the computer case.

Close the machine back up.

Drop off on his doorstep with a note "Everything is fixed!".

For fixing my mom's friends new computer I got their older PIII 550 system as my payment. :)

For setting up DSL at my mom's work I got their older 20" trinitron monitor as my payment. :)

I have a complete PIII 550 system w/ a 20" monitor now. Muhahahaha.

Do what brxndxn said. Fix it, hand him a printed paper stating the hours you spent working on it and your charge per hour. Make it like 2 hours, $25 an hour. Tell him he can have his fixed computer after payment is made, if he does not pay up, computer will belong to you. Unless it's family, any one's computer I work on is charged. Some people are just assholes, while others understand the value of your time. One friend of my dad's calls me up. Seems like his NT4 machine went bonkers, so I tried fixing it over the phone with him (he was clueless, didn't even know what the BIOS was). After we tried, it turned out he didn't have the correct CD (he had SP5 installed, and only had SP4 on CD, so we couldn't "repair" the install). He told me thanks for the help and asked for my address. I asked why, and he replied that he would like to send me some money for the help. I didn't even get his computer fixed, and spent no more than half an hour on the phone, and he wanted to pay me. I told him it was alright, but he insisted on paying me. So he said the next time he's over he'll give me the money. I wish everyone was like this guy, but the world if full of asshats.

Yes, a woman at work does it from time to time.. I now charge her $50 for a format and re-install. :)
she actually pays it.

I don't feel bad. it's annoying.

Hate it, hate it, hate it! I have 4 sitting on my home office floor that people brought by for me to work on. I told them I would get to it when I could. So far I haven't touched them and it will most likely be a couple of more weeks until I do. Trying to teach these folks a lesson. I tried the whole charging for my time thing but people didn't seem to mind and my free time is MUCH more valuable than the $75 an hour I was charging them.

Then talk to your dad about it. Ask him how he would like to go work a couple hours for one of your friends for no charge. I think it's stupid that you're taking sh!t from your dads friend. I don't care if he's your dad's boss. Either your dad pays you for helping HIS friend or the guy pays you.

My dad exploits the [insert vulgarity] out of me for tech support. I'm about 2,500 miles from him, and he can't find someone a little closer? Mostly by phone, but one spring break he practically would let me do anything but work on his computer.

Learn the word "No" and how to use it. Don't let people walk all over you.
