Don't you hate it when people 'grunt'??

God it's pretty damn annoying when these 20 something year olds come to the gym and start lifting weights and always 'grunt' for every rep they do. Its like 'hey kid, is it really necessary to show you can barely lift a meager 50lbs?" Do people do this to act tough or something? Just seems so stupid and it's like they're not aware of others or anything like that.. I've heard of guys doing this when they sleep with their partner too which if I was a girl, I'd ****** slap his face and or tell him to STFU.

Anyone ever notice this? Most if not all people I know agree with me and think it's stupid, also whats really annoying is those who are benching and 'bounce' the bellbar off of their chest and then have the nerve to give me advice when I'm talking to someone else about something, right like you know a thing or two about weight lifting ya dumbass.

I equate it with poor etiquette, just like not wiping the bench off after you've sweated all over it.

I grunt once in a while on my last sets. Then again I'm in my own world when I go to the gym... I have my headphones on and could care less what everybody else thinks.

It depends what they are doing. Someone doing high rep curls sounds pretty ridiculous when they start grunting. However, grunting when doing heavy squats or deadlifts is perfectly acceptable ;)

What's wrong with grunting a little, as long as it cannot be heard half-way across the room. Plus, most people are wearing headphones in the gym and cannot hear anything unless it is really loud. The thing I hate the most are the people that constantly slam weights and don't wipe down equipment after they use it.

Well, have you tried NOT slamming your weights down on the last set?

Grunting is kind of productive on heavy deadlifts/squats/cleans of any sort/ or heavy pressing. But I get where you're coming from.

Yes, I wouldn't call it slamming but merely dropping... I dunno what you consider slamming however... Considering that the floor and the weights themselves are padded where I go, it really isn't that loud...

I would take everyone screaming every rep if the idiots at the gym I go to would stop doing curls and deadlifts, especially deadlifts, on the power racks. They don't even use the rack for deadlifts but they keep the bar close enough to them (there is room elsewhere) that nobody else can use the rack for anything. Assholes.

When I was learning the throwing events for the decathlon the coach actually recommended a good grunt or yell. You are supposed to explode, not just push really hard. Serious lifting is probably similar.

Actually, during weight training I saw several people with logs indicating they just come in every day and do the exact same weight and amount for each exercise. I'd much rather share the gym with people actually doing their hardest and improving, even if that means grunting, than worthless wastes of space who never push themselves and just make me wait longer for equipment.

Do you have a need to do deadlifts everytime you go to the gym? I think what you should do is get there early, and just sit there or do something stupid next to the rack so no one else can use it, maybe they'll wise up, dunno...

You could just politely point out to them that they don't need the rack for what they are doing, but that you cannot squat without a rack. That's always worked for me in the past. Most of the people doing curls in the squat rack probably have no idea they are pissing off the people who really want to use the rack for squatting.

heh people like that are funny... i do tend to breathe loud when doing heavy weights, but it's well within reason.

Get there early and sit there? What a plan! Leave work early so I can reserve myself a spot at the squat rack? ;)

I'm going to do that next time it happens, but I doubt I'll get anywhere. It's a big group of rednecks that run around the gym trying to look important, so having them move is probably not going to get me much more than some stares. It hasn't been too big of a problem yet, but on squat day I hate doing more than one or two exercises before I do my squats.

And thinking about it, I have no idea when these guys actually work. It's an on-site gym for a factory, but the times they are at the gym are before 1st shift ends but well before 2nd shift starts.
