Don't you feel like you have to tip everyone these days ??

Lets not turn this into an ugly why you tip or don't tip.

I just bought all new appliances for the kitchen(all stainless mind you)
The range, hood and fridge was delivered by Sears.
The 2 guys did a little extra work trying to get the old ones out and the new ones in so I gave them $20(I had to pay delivery fee already).

So the dishwasher guy is here.
He picked up the dishwasher from Sears and brought it himself so he can install it.
I paid $100 for the installation.
So hes here on his back getting the old one out and in the new one installed, etc....

Should I tip the guy ??
I just feel bad when I don't tip delivery services.

Looks like hes gonna done in less than 30 mins.
I don't think I'll be tipping him.
I did pay $100 installation fee dammit, I shouldn't feel guilty.

OK, so why do I still do ??
Maybe because I used to wait tables for 5+ yrs.....hmmmm............

But you were probably getting paid $2.xx per hour, I imagine, and I'm pretty sure this guy is getting paid a lot more.

that would never occur to me as something i would do or need to do

Yeah, its kind of hard for me to get the tipping obssession out of my mind being in the industry for 5+ yrs.

I get the same feeling because I worked valet for two years. Sometimes I feel the need to tip the guy doing my oil change, haha. But if I paid 100 dollars for an installation fee, and he finished in relatively short time, I don't think I'd feel guilty for not tipping.

I'm the exact opposite now, why should I tip if they aren't doing a 100% job? If I could do it, so can they.

I usually offer a coke or glass of water. I would only tip if they went above or beyond the service I paid for. I delivered mattresses and furniture for a year while in college and about 1 of 10 people tipped average $5. The only people who tipped were middle class who bought mid-range cost goods. The rich people who bought the most expensive stuff never tipped and the people who bought the cheapest stuff never did either.

offer a drink, they'll appreciate it enough not to care if you don't tip them in most cases... because these guys shouldn't be tipped in the first place. Usually just food service workers and barbers... anything else ?

My brother delivers furniture and has the opposite experiences. He gets big tips from the wealthy.

I tipped the guys who delivered our range and cooktop and they took away all kinds of stuff I had torn out, even though the contract specifically stated that they would only remove one item per item delivered.

Guy came to deliver a washer/dryer for me, got it down to the basement, and even though he just had to bring it and drop it off, he installed it for me and all. I paid cash for it (very cheap rebuilt units), and threw in an extra $20 for him spending the time to get them up and running and testing for me. If I had paid for full install then I wouldn't have, but I paid for just the units and roadside delivery, as I was all set to do it myself, and he simply offered to do it instead.

Yeah, the guy got done in less than 30 mins.
I asked him if he eats at McDonalds and I gave him some free meal cards.

Let me upload some of the pictures.
Got to show them off.

I normally tip.

A few years ago I bought an upstairs condo and I bought some furniture. The delivery guys came and worked their butts off they couldn't get the couch through the door so they got it in through the balcony (I was impressed), I dug into my pocket to give them a nice tip and I had nothing, then I remembered I had bought a few coke 12packs so I asked them if they wanted some coke and their eyes lit up until they saw me carrying the 12packs.

Tom

if you already pay an installation or delivery fee, i don't see why tipping is necessary, especially if the fee is in excess of $70.

btw tom, that's a great story 😀
