A school sign shows six different times drivers need to slow from 45 miles per hour to 25 mph. WDIV reports.
Just waiting for a report of an accident happening in that area. WTF is the school district thinking? D:

heh all the ones here are electronic flashers.

maybe the cops are thinking 'cha-ching!' there are always cops around during school start/dismissal.
The estimated cost for electrical flashers on Bogie would cost near $50,000.
holy shit.

wtf..

just do 6:49-9:10 and 2-4:30 and save a lot of trouble..

ahh nvm i watched the video and they can't.

thats fucking insane.

A sign with a flashing light when the reduced speed limit is in effect would be better, but I doubt this will cause any accidents. Worst case is people slow down when they don't have to. Signs like this exist all over the country, but they usually only have two time ranges instead of six.

Where I live, it's just a broad rule for when you need to slow down. 30km/h (about 20mph) within the designated school zone between the hours of X and Y. I think it's something like 7am-5pm. I just avoid all school zones.

They can't even afford to follow their own laws properly lols.

That isn't going to be very effective at controlling traffic, no common sense. If they want to actually slow down traffic during those times they will need the $50,000 lights.

Yea it looks like the admin realized it was stupid, but when they asked for a broader time zone to apply to the entire day, it was 'illegal' so listing each window was their only option. It was either that or buy a huge flashing sign and they raised the issue of cost. Not sure if I want to fault anybody here. Seems like the sign is just a result of an admin being cornered due to lack of options.

That's retarded. My guess is people are going to waste time reading the signs and start accidentally running over people.

Sort of like how when a cop car is set up in a speed trap and everyone starts panic breaking to 20mph under the speed limit on the highway.

$50K for the flashers? What the fuck are those things made out of?

Keep in mind the company who makes the flashers is run by billy bob, cousin to the mayor. The lights themselves are $2500, but you have to add in corruption fees, gov't bureaucracy fees and time, it all adds up quick!

50K probably includes installation. Looking at the pic, there is no power that is within arms reach, unless, magically, there is a distribution panel where the pic is cut off.

Even assuming that, $50k is absolutely ridiculous. I need to start a company making traffic signs/lights

while I agree 50K is a little high, you would be surprised how much the stuff cost. The enclosure alone needs to be rated for outside. That alone would be more than $500. Then, where are you going to put it? Then, since is it a public project, you cannot simply hire an electrician to do the installation. You have to hire an engineering firm to sign off on an installation. Now you can see why the price sky rockets for such a simple project.

I'm in the AEC industry, I can pretty much promise that $50k is extremely bloated. Granted, this is some sort of contract based situation where they don't figure out the cost of each light but instead do an 'average' cost.. And I hear you on the enclosure and systems inside the light, but still... at very very most $5k for the enclosure/light, $5-10k max for install including permits and having it done with approved city engineers... and that assumes they have to get permits and all for power.

$50k is ridiculous. Don't get me wrong, I completely believe it.. but it's yet another symptom of the issues with small gov't corruption.

Most of these extremely cost bloated situations have some form of corruption behind the scenes.

I know the pain...I know the pain...but yeah, I have seen some estimates from contractors at my previous job. I love it when a contractors try to justify the cost of laying 5 feet of conduit....

Don't forget if it's more than a few hundred feet from a ready source of 120 volt AC, they need to pay the power company to install a transformer nearby. Cost goes up another $10,000.

Why don't they just put the sign on a pole with a solar panel and a battery? That solution has to be cheaper than $50K!

At the very least you need two flashing signs, one for each direction. I have no idea what is included in the $50k, but let's not judge that without seeing the plan.
