Problem is, most hot dogs are just shit.

I like the Oscar Mayer Selects, all beef and no nitrates or nitrites. Oh, you can put a line of mustard on them, maybe even some sweet relish, but these dogs are good enough you can eat them plain in the bun. Nom nom nom. Also, they are pretty much available everywhere, as opposed to the people hyping up their local butcher's hot dogs that no one else in the world will ever get to try.

I use ketchup to masturbate, the heat caramelizes the ketchup and adds great flavor.

For me, bean less chili, fresh diced onions, fresh shredded cheddar cheese and mustard (spicy or whatever).

^Perfect^

But otherwise, IMO, a hot dog is the one food item you can put whatever the h3ll you want on it. It ain't like you're putting ketchup on filet mignon.

They are Hot Dogs of course.

Nothing pisses me off more than somebody telling me what to do with my food. Chicagoans are some of the worst. "Don't put ketchup on your hotdogs". What? How about we play a game called hide-and-go-fuck-yourself? It's my food that's going in my mouth so I'll do whatever I want to it. Why would you take something as American as hot dogs and then take away my freedom to do what I want with it?

I like to caramelize onions, red bell pepper and crimini mushrooms and add that to hot dogs or sausage on a bun.

the absolute best topping ever.

1/2lb all beef dog dipped in BBQ sauce, with Texas Chili, cheddar cheese and 3 strips of bacon. They call it the Artery Clogger.

I only put yellow mustard on a hot dog... maybe once in a while with sauerkraut. I will occasionally eat franks with ketchup, but no bun - just on a plate with some Kraft macaroni and cheese and a vegetable of some kind as side dishes. That's one of my desperation meals when I don't have any meat in the freezer.

Chicago can't even get Chicago right. :D

But I'll settle this argument once and for all. Veal on a bun dripping in tomato sauce with peppers and onions. Chew on that hot dog, you and your hog anuses.

I've always put ketchup on my hotdogs, and I always will. Because it's tasty. Haters gonna hate!

Being not from Chicagoland, ketchup still isn't put on a hot dog. And neither are pickles, hot peppers or tomatoes.

A proper hot dog is

spicy brown mustard, relish, diced raw onion, sauerkraut
or
chili and diced raw onion
or
spicy brown mustard, NY-style red onion sauce, sauerkraut

Id like to endorse this post and give my approval on all 3 aforementioned options here. This post is 100% factually correct.

Source: grew up in northern NJ near NYC. Been to Coney Island and eaten from original Nathans hot dog stand.

Hot dogs are crap anyway, what does it matter what you put on them? Though I will admit, I know one person that puts mayo on them. That's gag worthy...

Yes, I know, there are fancy expensive hot dogs out there, but at the end of the day, they're still hot dogs. If we were talking about a GOOD steak here, or perhaps a really good burger, or some excellent sausage (bratwurst, kielbasa, etc.) then I'd agree.

I concur!

I hate Chicago style hotdogs with all of that big chunky crap on it. I do like ketchup on mine as well as brown mustard, diced onions, and relish. Chicago "pizza" is even worse.

Hot Dog and Pizza arguments get heated on the internet. Being from Chicagoland, ketchup is NEVER put on a dog, with many places refusing to even serve it.

Proper dog, Vienna beef only.

Funny, my Aunt is a sales rep for vienna beef, you wanna talk bulk beef....
