Is there any improvements you think in transfer rates from a hardware modem compared to a winmodem? I currently connect at around 42.6-45.2k... I dont plan on playing games on my dialup so thats not a factor.

Its unlikely that you would see any boost in performance going to a hardware modem. In some cases it could get worse. My 56k USR hardware modem will not keep a stable connection to my ISP unless I limit its connection speed to 40k. My lucent winmodem will however connect stabily at 49k.

I'll sort of leech off of your question if you don't mind instead of starting another topic.

I have a winmodem that only connects at 26.4k. I am a big online gamer though.
In my case would you think that a hardware modem would be better then?

Although I don't play online as much as I used too, my WinModem is just as good as my old hardware modem.

Also, take a look at this FAQ.

I have both Winmodem in one PC(Elsa 56k microlink) and hardware modem(Diamond SupraExpress 56i V Pro) in the other,I get the same connection speed which is just over 49k and pings are the same, also there`s no difference for me in online gaming so I would say stay with your current modem unless you have major problems or you`re really unhappy with it.
