Don't park your car under a radio transmitter

Went to examine a large radio/TV mast just out of curiosity today. Drove right up to it, and parked about 10 feet from the base of the mast.

Having satisfied my curiosity as to the TV antennas, FM, 4 GSM and 1 3G cell base station, numerous microwave uplinks, trunked radio repeaters, and several things I couldn't identify.

I realised to my horror, that the remote control to my car alarm (Clifford) wouldn't work. Presumably it was drowned out by several kW of power coming from the mast. Fortunately I'd left the car unlocked, and from the inside, the remote would deactivate the immobiliser. Of course, I could have got around the immobiliser, but it gave me pause for thought.

Is that your original name? I don't remember seeing you around before...
Yeah I'm pretty sure that is his original name, he's had it for a while at least.
Doesn't normally post in OT though as I'm sure bacillus himself will tell you when he comes back online 🙂

You can get an idea of what's going on by walking into the field holding a flourescent light tube. It should light up if the transmitter is strong enough. Also, don't forget to wear your lead Jockey shorts. :Q

That's why laser keys kick ass 🙂 I can open the door using the regular key and as alarm goes off I'll plug the laser key into ignition and alarm stops 🙂

Man if that transmitter was enough to block out your car alarm, i think you should be more worried about your nads than the car alarm. Run Forrest Run!

I'd worry less about any type of RF and more about the birds sh1tting on your vehicle. We got a tower out back, and if you park within 50 feet, depending on wind velocity, you'd be cover in bird sh1t.

Yup, german cars use that. It's hard to explain unless you've seen on 🙂

I used to be the original Jedi Knight ala Harvey. My dad was a Ham Radio man and hen he'd keyed his antique 4 kilowat Klystron tubes I could run around the yard with a full lit fluroscent tube. It's really wierd. No wires, no batteries.

How long was the wire to the ballast?
Do you have similar urges today?
If given a choice of a large piece of chocolate cake and a hot dog which would you choose?
Do you always choose milk with cake and pepsi with the hot dog?
Are you happy today?

What you don't realize is tht Moonie WILL have in-depth answers to every one of those questions. Give him 15 minutes. :Q

Now, what I want to know is how much radiation a Klystron tube eminates, and how long Moonbeam was exposed to it! This might explain some theories of mine! 🙂

So you're that ass in the parking lot whose car alarm always goes off when he gets in the car?

I have seen one. Do you mean to say laser cut key? AFAIK there is no laser in the key, it's otherwise no different from a regular key other than the way it's cut, and there's nothing special about sticking the key in the ignition to shut off the alarm 😉😛

If your suggesting, ultimatebob, that the plasma that flows from my ears would melt your brain, I have no doubt about it.

I was going to answer your questions in greater detail, HDJ1, but MichaelID hurt my feelings. Now I'm feeling like having my milk from a bottle. Oh and thanks for reminding me. I got to go to send the nurse to get some more. I have violent tantrums in the morning if I don't have milk with my coffee. "Guard, will you send the nurse to the store please."

I was laughing so hard I forgot to post the reply....

😀 You make my day!!!

I'm not sure if we're talking about the same thing. My key doesn't have the metalic part that's sticking out. Instead it has some sort of laser reader that when inserted into ignition uniquely identifies the key and enables all electric circtuits. As far as I know it's a lot harder to forge such a key. Also, regular keys (at least on other cars I owned) don't disable alarm when plugged into ignition.

Probably expensive as hell to get another one too I'm guessing.

I'm sure it is.

Basically what happened was it blew out your front end. It was putting enough power out that the amplifiers railed so hard that they overheated and blew. Reminds me of a story I heard of a guy that had something like a 10kW CB amp in his truck (FCC regs limit to 5W, no k), he'd go around blowing people's CBs simply by keying up.
