people in my building are angry that they were lied to. they thought only the 1%'ers were going to get a tax hike. they were surprised last week when their 2week paycheck takehome was a little smaller.

jesus.. people are idiots.

the payroll decrease was TEMPORARY. if it doesnt return to the normal rate, then you wont have social security because the payroll tax is what funds social security!
Or is Obama to blame since he obviously didnt explain it to the public that well?

jesus.. people are idiots.

and while i'm at it, i cant believe Bush's TEMPORARY tax cuts became permanent, at the expense of the US debt, and our country's future.
if we return that temp tax cut back to normal levels, it's considered a tax hike??? WTF?!

jesus.. people are idiots.

now in the county where i live, my newly elected freshman republican assemblyman is trying to reduce our property taxes because the county is doing better than expected.

The democrats want the taxes to remain the same. one of them said it best:
i'm going to be out of a job if we have to raise taxes next year. it's better to keep it at the same level and keep the excess in an emergency fund.

win-win:
keep taxes the same this year and next instead of lowering it this year then raising it back to the same level next year. voters will only see that the taxes was raised from the previous year.
they'll be less mad when taxes remain the same level.

jesus.. voters are idiots.

So what does that tell politicians? Dont lower taxes EVER!

keep it at the same level else you'll get more unsatisfied voters when you do have to raise taxes. And unlike the federal govt, local govts (at least mine) MUST have a balanced budget every year.

Your right of course. People notice if their paycheck gets smaller even if its a few dollars.

Was one of Romney's proposals to extend or make permanent the Payroll tax deduction?

Yup people are dumb. I knew when this came out that this was only temporary. It wasn't sustainable in the long term. However it was a great way to get money directly into the pocket of people that would spend it. That being said I don't think with all the overall tax fight the fact that payroll was going backup was really discussed very well.

Has it ever occurred to libtards and neocons that the govt shouldn't be stealing the money in the first place?

 And who exactly is going to maintain all the roads? Do you want them to go around and ask for voluntary donations?

Why don't you just move to Somalia if you think no government is better.

Speaking of - could you please find out for me who maintains the road since you're asking the question too? I would like to know, I've been wanting to know for the last 5 years.

-Signed: The highways all throughout the entire nation and the "Oh, never be in that lane it is filled with pot-holes, don't you know that" krew .

I take it you haven't spent much time in other countries. Our roads are much better maintained than most other countries, which is even more surprising given the size and rural nature of most of our country.

Here here!

But to be fair to our government, nearly every tax instituted was temporary, we just haven't lifted them yet, be patient!

Republicans and Democrats alike opposed extending the payroll tax cut.

It screws with the cost curves associated with social secuirty.

We can fund the roads to the tune of about 100-150 billion a year. Sounds great if that is your proposal for the size of the federal govt.

How about hiking payroll taxes a lot, and then reducing them 6 months before an election to a rate that is still higher than the original one?

And roads are only one of hundreds of things that are needed in society that morons like Anarchist don't think they should have to pay for. If you don't want to pay for roads and the basic things needed in a first world country, then I invite you to move to a third world country like Somalia to see where your ideals would end up.

I do find it funny people who bitch about taxes when personal taxes if you factor in all forms of taxes on an individual the US has some of the lowest taxes of the developed world.

OP: if you follow Keynesian economics, the temporary decrease in taxes was to increase spending & help stop the economy from tumbling/help the economy recover. A Keynesian economist would tell you that sometimes you have to lower taxes, and sometimes you have to raise taxes.
