Back when I did mine it was very convoluted. It was bad because I had the most recent version of the OS (3.1.3 or something, not too sure offhand). At that time there wasn't any 1-click solutions, so I apologize if I haven't kept up, but on my EVO unrevoked worked as:

Go to www.unrevoked.com in android browser and download apk, install, click button. No PC required. Still sounds easier than your Spirit Jailbreak.

I don't even believe what you are saying now. Maybe you have no sense of time, but I've owned the iPhone since day 1. Its been easy to jailbreak since 2.2, which was 2 years ago. Spirit has been around over a year now and it made it even easier. Not that it wasn't incredibly easy before, you just had to put the phone into DFU mode yourself.

Maybe I didn't know about this site you speak of, but if I was a normal user - using google. I would type "How to root android 2.1"

First link I recognize that is totally relevant with what i want to do is 10 steps:

Code:
1. Download the 2.1 update.zip file from our manual update post. update.zip (alt link)
2. Once downloaded, name it update-2.zip and place it on your desktop.
3. Download this file, rename to droid-ESE81-update-2.zip and place it on your desktop.
4. Open the command prompt (Start>Run>cmd) on your PC and type the following commands:

cd Desktop
copy /b update-2.zip+droid-ESE81-update-2.zip update.zip

5. If done correctly, this will create a file called update.zip.
6. Mount your Droid via USB and place this new update.zip file in the root of your SD card.
7. Unplug your phone and reboot into recovery. (Hold Power + X)
8. Once the exclamation pops up, hit volume up and camera button (half way) at the same time.
9. Using the d-pad, choose “apply update.zip”.
10. Reboot and BAM! 2.1 rooted goodness!

Spirit is 7 steps

Code:
Step 1: Download Spirit from our download page.

Step 2: Make sure you have at least version 9 of iTunes.

Step 3: Back up your iPhone, iTouch or iPad in iTunes, just in case something goes wrong.

Step 4: Launch Spirit.

Step 5: Click “Jailbreak”.

Step 6: Wait just a few seconds until you see this image:

Step 7: Your iPhone will reboot and you should have the Cydia icon on your springboard.

Niether is what I would call difficult. The only people crying about jailbreaking being difficult, are once again, people who don't own iPhone's and try and make shit up.

Er well I'm telling you it wasn't easy when I did it. You most likely Jailbroke early on in iOS 3 when there were more vulnerabilities, but with the patch I had it was difficult at that time. I'm not retarded and researched for several hours before starting and everything said that the update I had made things a PITA. Not that I'm saying security updates don't happen... the latest OTA update made the one-touch Unrevoked root ineffective, but that's beside the point.

This is all a sidetrack from the original discussion though (which I think was a sidetrack from the OP itself...). Android offers more freedom without hacks. I don't care how easy the hack is, it's still a hack and it voids the warranty. I know you can usually revert very easily but throwing around terms like "hack" and "void warranty" makes the average person (who you say would definitely like an iPhone) very nervous.

Spirit jailbreak is litterally = Download EXE, double click exe, plug in iphone, click big button in the middle that says "Jailbreak"

Rooting an android device is a lot more difficult then jailbreaking. I'm not saying its difficult, but a lot more so then jailbreaking.

You obviously know nothing about jailbreaking if you think its a 21 step process.

Android has more customization out of the box that's just how it is. Many people prefer customization which is why they would probably choose Android over iPhone. Also it's dumb to think just anyone could or even would jailbreak. Not everyone feels like voiding their warranty to get some basic phone customization.

With power comes responsibility. As long as there is full disclosure, I am fine reading what the app does before installing it. I prefer that to having someone else do that and decide for me what I can and can't install.

This article is pretty interesting with regards to "permissions fatigue" in Android.

http://www.androidtapp.com/android-...spyware-and-stealing-sensitive-user-data-fud/

A wallpaper app was asking permission to SMS data and other personal information, and not many people noticed.

meh...its a non-issue for me. There have been a couple apps that I was going to try out but decided against it when I saw it needed my GPS (ads). I don't see what the big deal is.

Would it make you feel better if Andy was wearing a black turtleneck? That way you could just believe whatever he was telling you...
