MY computer is not working, because i stupidly spelled pepsi on it, and its a laptop, so i have to get the motherboard replaced, which DELL is charging me 500 dollars for. However, I have found computer that are maybe a year younger then mine, and might be as good as mine, howeveri dont know what is in mine, and sense i am comfortable with the stuff that was in mine, as in i liked how the computer ran with it in there, i dont need anything more then it. I have a Dell inspiron 1100, but is their some kind of software or something that will tell me what is in my computer? Thanks.

I know of some software, but it has to be run on the computer... so the computer doesn't work?

Do you still have the stuff Dell sent you with the system (as in sales receipt, packaging contents list etc.)?

For $500 you could just buy a new laptop.

And i wouldn't recommend getting another Dell. But thats just me.

The closest thing I found on the dell website was an inspiron 1200. Since yours is older and only an 1100 I would expect it to be considerably less powerful than this.

Base Model Includes:
Intel® Celeron® M 350 (1.3 GHz, 400MHz FSB, 1MB L2 cache)
Microsoft® Windows® XP Home Edition
256MB Shared15 DDR SDRAM
14.1" XGA Display
30GB5 Ultra/ATA Hard Drive
24x DVD/CD-RW Drive
8-Cell NiMH battery
Starting at 6.33 lbs16
90-day Limited Warranty3 and Mail-in Service

If the other computer has specs that are close to or greater than these, then it's a pretty safe bet that it's more powerful than your Inspiron 1100.

You might as well start looking for a new notebook.

$500 for a mobo for laptops isn't abnormal at all.

Check the dell support site. Input your computer system tag, its on the bottom of the computer on a sticker. Insert the tag and it will tell you the EXACT specs the laptop shipped with. Any other changes you would have to have performed on your own after it shipped from the factory.

ok u guys are saying to not go with a dell but let me know what u think when i tell u this:

All i do is go on aim, surf the web ALOT, dont play any games on the computer, have alot of things open at the same time and download/install alot of stuff for my computer. A dell would seem perfect for what i want to do, but maybe its not the best one for me? I want something reliable, that i can keep for awhile, that wont crash alot, that is PRETTY FAST PLEASE, and good customer support. What company do u guys think i should go with.

and after looking at my computer that 1200 is a lil bit better then the one i have. So yea its pretty basic and i was happy with it., but i would of liked it to be a little faster and be able to install some more stuff, and run some more programs at the same time.

thanks alot guys

The 1200 is NOT better than your computer. The processor in your laptop looks like a P4 2.4 ghz which totally stomps the 1.3 ghz celeron in the Inspiron 1200. Your computer has the same amount of memory, 10gb more hd space, and an ATI graphics solution.

What makes you think that the 1200 is better?

so guys, what are ure suggestions for a new laptop? with a budget of 500 im not sure i can get anything good. if i sell that computer above, not working, i have no idea how much i would get for it.

oh ok. so i still gotta decide if i want to pay 500 for a new motherboard from dell or use that 500 plus possibly selling the above computer and see what i can get for it. selling teh above computer would be hard though cuz i dont know what is working and whats not. other then it needing a new motherboard i dont know what else it needs, that may be it.

the problem i am having is for the laptop to either buy a new one or just get the motherboard. i dont know of any laptops that dell sells that are 500 dollars.

now in terms of me getting a desktop computer, do u reccomend a dell desktop if i cant BUild one?

umm, its pretty hard to build a laptop...

but, i would get an ibm thinkpad. i had one of those and it lasted me for years without any problems at all, then when i got a dell laptop, it broke 3 times in 2 months.

1. Why can't you build it?

2. I didn't say that.

i wouldn't say that. its a 2.4G which is a northwood with a 533mhz FSB and no hyperthreading. i think the 1.3ghz celeron would be very comparable in power to it.

well i thought IBMs were mostly for work, like business, office cubicle types of people. However, that would probobly work thought cuz my mom has one for work and she loves it.

Oops, didn't notice that it was a celeron M. I still think the P4 2.4 ghz should beat it in performance, but not by as much as I thought earlier.

I think Dell is teh suX0r.

Which that said, check out this link, and scroll down till you see deals on desktops and laptops. They're mostly Dell though. Keep in mind, you get what you pay for
