I just spent half an hour trying to explain the concept of copy and paste to someone in my company. I?ve never had an experience like that before. I mean... I can't even remember a time when I couldn't do it... it's so hard to empathize... It makes me think of the social responsibility we as knowledgable computer people have to fight computer illiteracy everyhwere to help keep people productive, confident and from getting ripped off. It sorta pisses me off tho at the same time too? I went to go talk to the web guys afterwards to try to share my experience and mabye get some pointers for how to handle that kind of situation. They ripped me a new asshole instead, saying that I sounded condescending and that I need to be more understanding.

I mean, what is so hard about not assuming that everyone who happens to know more than you and who's very presence is threatening your job security, is actually out to do harm to you? Do I really need to be treated like the spy among the ranks just becase I'm actually trying to feel for an end user?

While most jobs require people to be computer literate, what that really means is that they know how to use the computer for their daily work. They don't really copy and paste that much so they don't really know how to do it. I once called up a user to perform an upgrade and she yelled at me, saying that all she knows how to do is do her daily work and "nothing else, including copying and pasting." Needless to say, it pissed me off. When I spoke to a co-worker about it, he said that there are people like that and you just have to deal with them. In my case, I just never ask users to back up their files anymore; I just do it myself.

Don't worry...there will be more. Just use this as an experience. :)

As long as they understand that I created the Internet, they can ask me whatever they want. How did you explain it to them? Maybe we can judge whether it sounded condescending or not.

(I teased someone before when they used "condensation" instead of "condescending" in a dept-wide email)

At least your co-workers were civil about it. I can't believe how insensitive the computer guys here are... If I wan't to be ripped a new hole, I'll do something stupid to deserve it. The only civil part of my whole episode was when I desperatley tried to explain what copy and paste was to the desperate user... they keep wanting to know how to get documents from their windows "my documents" to their AOL "my documents" so they can attach them to emails and skip the whole copy paste thing since it's so complicated

no no no no no... I had no problem dealing with the users at all... it was when I wen't to speak to the people who have support like that in their job description that I ran into the firestorm. I certainly wasn't treading on any toes... they just wanted to make sure that I knew that I was an asshole for "thinking everyone should know this stuff." They're so hostile and bitter normally that nobody would ever be able to approch them to ask simple questions.... and they know it too. they hate their jobs and want everyone else to be miserable too.

I understand that there are people out there who dont know and want to know... thats encouraging... I know there are people out there who dont know and dont want to know.... that's sad... either way, I've been in computers too long to judge people by their technical prowess alone. Some of the nicest people I've ever met were to embarrassed to use computers they knew so little.

Seems like your co-workers have had their fair share of getting yelled at and are now taking it out on you. Just give them the silent treatment :p

I was wondering if anyone would see it that way... not that I was fishing for it, but I was more expecting to get an even bigger heaping of crap here :D

If anyone on ATOT thinks that there is even a remote chance I *might* have not been too far off base this morning, than I must have said something right. Thanks
