I have managed to distance myself from a cell phone so far. But, it looks like it is time. Need a recommendation for a smart phone. Will use it mainly for internet and for emergency calls and just for vacation. Am completely overwhelmed as to what is on the market. Usually I will buy what is the latest and greatest out there. I vacation all over the country every year. Is there one with nationwide coverage?

AT&T/Sprint: SGS2
Verizon: Droid Bionic/Nexus Prime (if the latter exists)

Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile all have nationwide coverage, though Verizon has the most extensive coverage.

Wait a little bit and see what happens with the iPhone 4S/5. I think they are announcing something in the 1st half of September sometime.

No offence; but if you've never owned a cell phone how tech savy would you say you are? My first thought would be get an iPhone (i.e. wait a few months), since Android seems to require a bit more tinkering and "hacking"..

But if you program Fortran in your sleep: sorry, just get whatever you want:p

A whole bunch of great, next-gen phones are coming out in the next 2 months. I'd strongly recommend waiting until late October. Demo the major OSes and see which one you like best. The ones to check out are:

Android: Galaxy S2 (T-Mobile, AT&T, Sprint) coming mid September, Droid Bionic/Nexus Prime (Verizon) coming sometime later this year

iOS: next-gen iPhone, supposedly coming to all 4 major carriers in October

Windows Phone 7: a bunch of next-gen phones will be coming soon. HTC Radar (T-Mobile) and Titan (AT&T) will be announced tomorrow. Samsung SGH-i937 (WP7 version of the Galaxy S 2 on AT&T) and a bunch of others should be announced in the next month or 2.

Hard to say. A lot of people say to wait and see whats coming on the horizon but there is always something on the horizon. If you are curious about the iphone or GS2 then wait until those are announced otherwise choose from a carrier that works best in the areas you will use it in.

It almost sounds like you want to get the cheapest phone since you wont be using it that much anyhow. If thats the case I would say get an Android.

Thanks for all the responses. How would I demo a phone OS?
