This is possibly the worst case of WRONG FORUM ever, but I must do it, I'm not getting enough opinions and suggestions in GH at all.

The question is whether the price difference between a 6800 GT and an X800 XL is worth it or not. If you think it is I'm willing to spend the extra for the GT. Plain and simple.

What's the price difference between the two?

Edit: If it's more than $30-40, I'd just say go with the X800XL.

It's at least a hundred bucks.

The 6800GT is not worth that much more than the X800XL IMO.

I agree. I've had both and I haven't noticed a difference between them. Both play everything on nearly max settings, so why bother paying $100 more for the 6800GT?

Because I hope to keep whatever card I get until at least the end of 06.

So perhaps the GT would be worth it for SM 3.0 support next year?

IMO, by the time any game makes heavy use of SM3, you're going to want a faster card anyway. Save your money now.

I dunno, I've had my 9800 Pro for 18 months now and it's still fine for HL2 and D3. The only reason I'll be upgrading soon is because I know I won't be able to afford it when I get to school.

With that said, if SM 3.0 would start to make an impact within 18 months, which it easily could, perhaps the GT would be worth it.

if the past is any indication, the gt will give you playability, but at lower res and details. that would apply to any card thats 2 years old, tho, and not a dig on the gt.

I agree with archcommus, I think that once games actually start using SM3 to its full potential, enabling it on the 6800's will get you unplayable framerates.

I got my x800xl planning on upgrading at the end of 06 also. My logic is that that is when longhorn will come out (meaning new DX version), and its about when Unreal Engine 3 somes out. I want to play UE3-based games, and I know they won't run on any current hardware, so I might as well just upgrade again then. I'm willing to run at lower res's to make it until end of '06 too. (my last card was a Radeon 9100, so I'm used to it).
