Don't go over 90!

Yesterday I was driving home (to Chicago) from a weekend reunion in Arkansas. Somewhere on state road 60 in Missouri, east of Poplar Bluff toward Dexter, I was caught speeding (95 in a 65) and pulled over. The trooper informed me that any speeding offence over 90 is automatic jail in that county, until bond is posted ($1048). Since my car was a rental, he escorted me to the Stoddard County jail and I parked it there.

I sat in the jailer's office (sometimes in the visitor's room) while my dad made arrangements with a local bondsman (they won't do anything for someone who doesn't live local, since it's so easy to skip out on). Once I was bailed out I took my sweet time driving home (cruising at 75, passing at 80).

So now, I owe my dad a lot of money and I have to miss a day and a half of work while I appear in court on a Wednesday morning in November. Moral of the story? Keep it under 90.

Wow, that's harsh. I've been pulled over for 90 and gotten a warning before, in California.

What's even funnier is that you still went ahead a sped the rest of the way home.

I went with the flow of traffic.

Sadly, somebody in the slow lane (in front of me) got a soda thrown at them :(

I'm guessing he got on Interstate 57 and shortly thereafter into Illinois. If you aren't above 80 the State Police won't bother pulling you over.

Instant jail time? Sounds like he might be trying to scare you? I've gotten a ticket for 109 in a 65mph, and one for 100 in a 55mph here in NH. Both times I just got a ticket, and had to go to court. There was no jail time involved. I'm not familiar with the laws there, but I'd be surprised if you could be jailed simply for going 30mph over the limit.

I used to think less than 15 miles over limit is safe. Not anymore, I'd keep it less than 10.

Okay, then you're excused for still speeding after getting caught. But one would think that you would have learned a lesson and actually drove at the speed limit the next time you got into a car.

You're stupid.
Over 85 in CT is an instant misdemeanor. Meaning, you have a criminal record. You should be more concerned about your record than missing work or owing your daddy money.

Ohhh....I thought he just threatened him with jail. They let him drive to the station? That seems weird...why wouldn't they just arrest him normally and tow the vehicle?

Edit:

Doesn't sound like jail to me...

You do realize that the various forms of speed detection are not always 100% accurate?

sound fishy to me. Officer caught you doing 90 i assume the speed limit is 70 as its intersate so that 20 over which is reckless driving, what i am confused if you were under arrested why did officer let your drive the car to the police station. You also said that sometimes you were sitting in the waiting room, that don't sound like jail to me, were you booked,(photographed, finger prints taken)?

And depending on tire size and the accuracy of the speedomoter you could easily have a few MPH difference there to.

I don't know a court where being 3 MPH would actually hold up.

You sir are correct, and that is good info to know.

The jailer told me it's a pretty new thing, that a lot of the counties are cracking down on 90+. He and the trooper both told me that had I been under 90 it would have been a lesser charge.

Ohhh....I thought he just threatened him with jail. They let him drive to the station? That seems weird...why wouldn't they just arrest him normally and tow the vehicle?

Normally, he said he would have had the car towed. But since it was a rental car, he cut me some slack. Technically, I was "in jail" but since the jailer knew I was having bond arranged he didn't outfit me or lock me up. Very nice on his part.

its asses like you that keep our prisons full so we dont have room to put pot smokers

Well, I was never in a cell, nor was I aware pot smokers should be imprisoned. But your opinion is duly noted.
