Absolutely nothing wrong with purchasing a gun for an average 10 year old.... provided:
1. There is an adult present with the child whenever the child is shooting.
2. The adult is knowledgeable about firearms safety.
3. The gun is locked when not in use. (Adult's responsibility)
4. The adult is prepared to teach the child about gun safety, and is willing to be responsible that the child understands completely.
Blame the parents. My kids never had access to their guns without my permission. I spent plenty of time making sure my kids handled their guns safely. The older has a 20 gauge shotgun (powerful enough to kill a deer (for those unfamiliar with guns)) And, the oldest (13) is allowed to use my .22 (small rifle) whenever he wants, with my permission. He goes into the woods, and comes back later with a couple of squirrels for dinner. It's my responsibility, and IMO, the youngest hasn't shown the responsibility with guns, and thus doesn't have his own gun yet. Oh, and the oldest also has a bow capable of dropping a deer also. Next year, he'll be old enough to hunt deer during archery season.
btw, statistically, youth hunters are the safest with guns. I'd rather have a kid hunting with me than some fool with a hangover and possibly still under the influence.
