can they really take his radar detector?

I hope some cop pulls you over and breaks all your headlights. Honestly.

Driving fast on empty highways hurts whom?

Nice job troll scum.

I probably pay lower taxes than you do.

How is that a "trollish" comment? Nice attitude though, love that Canadian inferiority complex with America. Pay for your own defense as well or just planning on the US to cover your ass?

The fines are far too punitive IMHO and I sincerely doubt they were raised to do anything other than generate additional revenue for govt. expenses, such as, oh nvm.....

He was going 54kph over the limit man! That's no excuse for that. What happens if your tyre blows out at that speed, or an animal runs in front of your car? You're dead, and so is every other poor sucker in the car. (and potentially other cars/people nearby)

Too punitive?? Not punitive enough in my opinion. He should be chilling in jail for a month.

Personally I think Canada's defence force is more than capable of repelling any hostile force (bar the USA of course)

A month in jail for speeding, yeah that makes about as much sense as a $2000-$10000 fine plus costs. Know why you will never see your option happening, it costs $ as opposed to generating.

Thanks for proving my point, if the change was due to safety concerns they would put jail ahead of just taking more $ for themselves.

Hmmm...well, I don't think so. None of them have enough power projection to make a succesfull invasion in Canada. Do any of these countries even have Carriers? Apart from the UK that is, and I think we can saftely say they're not going to attack Canada anytime soon. Old Queen Liz might be slightly upset about that. :D

 Serves him right too. I remember about a year back on the 401 the normal speed limit in the left lane was about 170 and up. Thats now changed, with a lot of those drivers having their cars impounded and their licenses suspended.

They have French blood in them. All it will take is a mean looking plane flying over canadeh and they'll throw up the white flag.

Been against the law in Ontario for the past... 4-5 years? And they put this in because of the speeds people were doing on the 400 series, they already had something like this from Chatam to London from the amount of accidents.

well, this is what Ontario gets for electing a left-wing Liberal idiot to run it.

there are several challenges to this law and hopefully in a few years this law will be overturned. The previous laws were fine.

much like our national gun registry idiocy, this legislation came about because of excessive whining from left-wing wackos who claimed 90% of speeders were racing and the number of people killed by street racers were too high. The government decided it would be a great idea to pacify them. Never mind that those killed by street racing were miniscule compared to those killed while talking on a cell phone or driving drunk. Street racing is obviously an epidemic that needs to be stopped to save thousands of lives, right?

this same government refused to ban cell phone conversations while driving because the police won't be able to tell the difference between a cell phone user and a coffee drinker. A quote from the Premier was "I can't tell the difference. How can the police?". Brilliant.

hell, we can't even have studded snow tires here. never mind that they out perform any other tire in snow and ice by a huge margin and would save many lives and prevent many accidents and reduce insurance rates.

I agree that our government atm is retarded, but the imposed over 50 limit should be kept in urban area's, like Toronto, Ottawa and southern Ontario. EDIT: After the edited statement, I actually agree fully

Is there any source for the $2000-10,000 fine other than the cab driver?

This is exactly why I think radar detectors are overrated no matter how good they are. They only detect radar when the RADAR is ON, and if the cop really wants to nail people he's not going to be driving around or sitting around with his radar on constantly. PWNED is exactly right. The Nelson ha-ha graphic is appropriate here.
