what hardware could you put into a linux box that is actually supported by the kernel found say in slack 8 or redhat 7.1....cuz i am clueless with linux but it would be nice to have an operational pc in order to learn more about the os.

the last two installs x wouldnt configure at all...gave me fatal system crash error messeges...this was peanut and slackware...both however i can boot into and run from the command prompt....can you do a kernel compilation from the command line...no no...stupid question...is there documentation some one can point to that focuses on command line excersise and proceedures
also is it possible to download saya tar or gzip to a windows partition and transfer it to a linux one...say you want a package or newer kernal or module but havve no working modem how do you get it into the system

I am pretty new to Linux myself, but I have had Red Hat 7 and 7.1. Red Hat 7 gave me a few problems with some hardware which I had to have one of my friends come over and fix. I just installed Red Hat 7.1 yesterday and everything went without a hitch. It was very easy to install and it found all the necessary drivers for all of my hardware.

I would recommend Red Hat 7.1.
 
yes you do compile a kernel from command line (there is an X tool for configuring though .. but why), you can compile it in about 10commands, http://www.kernel.org , http://www.linuxdoc.org .. as for transferring it, yep, are you dual booting? if so then u just mount it in linux, like this command
mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /foo/bar . assuming u have dir's called foo and bar heh .. the second can be whatever u want, the /dev/hda1 is where ur windows partition is, most probably there, as for getting hardware to work, what hardware do you have .. slack and rh7.1 have diff kernels, slack8 has 2.2 (i think it still does anyway) and rh7.1 has 2.4 .. well good luck ..

well i am 28% into the second iso for redhat 7.1....but just out of curiousity what is in your system...i did find support for redhates newer kernel at promise for ide raid
 
thanks neural....i'll check out those two sites...and yes unless i was able to configure a modem to work properly...pretty sure my wireless connection is not gonna happen just yet in linux i'll be dual booting
 
RedHat has a list of supported hardware, look at it. Linux is a command line kernel and gnu tools are command line. So just because you cannot get X working you should not think poorly of linux, just your self. linuxdoc.org is a page I recommend you bookmark and spend some time reading. Also go pick up a book and you should be set. And NEVER tell us to not flame and just answer the fscking question.

oh on my rh box, i have kt7a, gf2 gts, and a 3com nic.. also for hardware u could check out http://www.linuxhardware.org , i think they have some info there .. ya linux is just the kernel .. once u get x up, u might want to forget it exists, a really learn some shell's, like bash .. then once u get it down check out x .. jus my 2cents ..

well in one system i ahve just a sb live value gf2mx400 cusl2-c witha 1ghz chip and a 40 gig ibm....but this is also the system i have the wireless pcmcia card adn pci hot adapter in.

the other has gf3 epox mobo and amd cpu santa cruz sound.....and a regular &quot;real&quot; 3 com modem...this is the system i wanted to put linux on but i am running a promise ide raid controller....but i saw where promise has support for rh with this tx controller i have.

problem thus far on the raid box is none of the others can see the ext2 and swap partitions and i cant run cfdisk or fdisk...so i was assunming it was an inability for them to see the hard drivews due to the controller

nVidia is a shtty video card for linux users to purchase. I recommend using a GOOD video card if you are using linux. Also, you should try using a hardware raid controller instead of the promise cards.

I think not, NV not only makes great cards, but they have GREAT Linux support and drivers.

Not everyone can afford, or wants a full blown raid solution.
And the promise cards work ok in Linux too, does take some playing with it. (Did for me anyway)

The hardware may be good, I dont know. I have never used an nVidia product (knowingly and willingly). thier business practices leave a lot to be desired. But thier linux/OpenSource support is CRAP. If you want to know what GOOD OpenSource support is look at Matrox (and from what I hear ATI just recently). Matrox has not only opened up a good deal of thier hardware to the linux community but is writing GPLed applications for thier hardware for the linux community. So I repeate, nVidia is a shtty video card for LINUX users.

That's fine. If you want a half assed raid system, more power too you. Hardware raid is generally better than software raid.
 
well actually i dont have an opinion on the type of video card...but rather the support offered....nvidia did look to have good driver support for linux it just seemed that kernel versions in both peanut and slackware didnt have the particualar gf cards i was using...although since the drivers much support all nvidia products i am not sure if this was the x problem or my monitor....sony gdm-fw900....there were alot of ati cards listed when i was attempting to configure x in peanut
and as for harware raid...on my scsi box i have a attotech ul3d..its also software raid....but have ordered the ami elite1600 so maybe that would work

I know of atleast 1 distro that does not include nVidia drivers in thier download distribution because of the lack of open source/free drivers from nVidia.
 
monkey its cool...i'll buy a freakin matrox or ati card...i dont care....would like to try one out anyway....ati is suppose to have much better 2d graphics anyway...and matrox i have heard similar things also....buthow can you tell what was causing x to crash

Check /vat/log/XF86log or something like that. there should be some information about what went on there.
 
ok soon as rh disk 2 iso is done i'll check out the log....i think it would make it a bit easier if there was some raphical interface such as kde...for me that is not having a strong command line back ground...but i think given a little exposer and having the ability to better visualize froma command line perspective the command line will be kinda refreshing.

First I messed up, its /var not /vat sorry 😉

And second, GNU/Linux is a command line OS. There may be a log checking utility in KDE, but I dont use KDE. The commands more and tail are important and you should learn them 🙂

NV drivers come by default with X anyway, and that's what matters.
If you want all the good open GL support you can DL their drivers, just like anyone else would with the windows drivers..

First, I only know that Mandrake does not include them because that is the only distribution I checked on. OpenSource is important because without it, linux will NOT grow. It is always better to have a company work WITH linux than AGAINST it.

Nah, just a friendly discussion. Im not an open source fanatic, but I understand that companies who work with the linux/BSD/gnu communities should be supported more than those who work against the communities.

The wierd thing is, I did not see a linux/BSD mahine under Office Boy's rig profile...

but according to this Nvidia stuff is not only supported they will help you on installing the current drivers.
Also XFree86 has had nvidia support built in (via the nv) drivers for a long time.
Anyway, i'm don't for now..

And on to trying to help the dude.
Are you trying to install X in the package as you install RH, or are you trying to DL a current version and install that.
Also maybe you could post a few of the last errors that you are getting, that might help.
 
well sheeet i dont even have a profile...lol....but i want to compile a kernel....that sounds strangly like taking a dump...lol...but i think it would feel better...so ia m gonna keep at it...lol
