NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) - Employees at Ford's Dearborn Truck Plant in Dearborn, Mich., will have to drive Ford Motor Co. vehicles to work or park across the street, the plant manager announced earlier this week.

The new parking policy, which is scheduled to take effect Feb. 1, was instituted by plant manager Rob Webber just as Ford reported losses of $1.6 billion from its North American auto operations in 2005 and Monday announced plans to close 14 plants and cut 30,000 jobs as it tries to reverse losses and respond to declining U.S. market share

The Dearborn Truck Plant, which represents one portion of the Rouge facility, has 2,600 union employees and makes the F-150 pickup truck, the best selling vehicle in the United States.

A Ford spokesman told CNNMoney the company supported the move, although it had not been extended to the other North American manufacturing facilities.

Officials with UAW Local 600, who backed the announcement, are scheduled to conduct talks with management next week to finalize the details and discuss expanding the ban across the entire Rouge facility, union president Jerry Sullivan told CNNMoney.

No brand loyalty, guess you'll be walking.

I'm not surprised the Union backed this move. And even less surprised that corporate backed the move as well.

Well, they can still drive what they like, but if they worked for Ford, you'd think they would own at least one Ford vehicle they could drive to work.

It doesn't compare to having to quit smoking or be fired.

It may be, but I guess if you work there and want to continue there, you'll park non Fords in another lot. I guess they are trying to force brand loyality.

Agreed.

So should firing people for smoking on their own time in their own house.

I agree. I don't think you should be able to fire them but I have no problem charging different rates for healthcare because of certain lifestyles.

The problem with that is the next thing you know they will want to do genitic screening to determine peoples healthcare premium. Why should I have to pay more because so and so has alleriges, or is diabetic, etc. If they are gay, then charge them more because they have a higher risk for AIDS. It just goes on and on.

I agree, though I can see higher insurance costs, which is what happens if you get private insurance.

Well, you're right on that. I had to have a blood screening for cholosteral and blood sugar to receive the best insurance this year. If you were deemed high risk, you have to take an 8 week course (1 paid hour per week) on nutrition, etc. to keep the better policy. You're indeed right, there is a slippery slope on this one....no easy answers.

Why? No one is forcing them to drive a ford, jus ensuring when people drive by a Ford plant, they see a ton of Ford Vehicles. If you were a manager of a AMD sales store would you want your workers all sitting around with Pentium laptops? All it is is a loss of a sort of perk, parking. Don't like it, find a new job.

Umm, yes, discrimination is part of it.

What about the Workers right to choose what they want? What about the fact that it's a major expense to own a Vehicle and as such one can't just go out and replace what they curently have? What about the fact that these workers Jobs can just be eliminated at any time and the Company has no reciprocal obligation? What about the fact that the company you work for doesn't Own you?

Simple, park across the street. With all the obesity in the world, should be better for them all anyway. :)

I would just quit. That's just ridiculous. They can't sell their pos cars to the public, so they are going to force their employees to buy them.

I suppose this should have been asked earlier: Is there a parking area "across the street"? If there is, I don't have a problem with it, but if there isn't I'd fully support Legal Action.

Agreed, if there was no alternative I would be against it as well.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) - Employees at Ford's Dearborn Truck Plant in Dearborn, Mich., will have to drive Ford Motor Co. vehicles to work or park across the street, the plant manager announced earlier this week.

Employees in non-Ford vehicles can still park in the employee lot across Miller Road and walk to the factory

in the other thread, the parking lot already required a special permit.

i didn't complain about not being able to park in the garages at school when i didn't buy a permit for them, only a regular commuter permit where i had to park in BFE.

now, anyone who can't park in the lot and does hold a permit should be remitted pro rata value for the permit.

Unless it is related to your performance, or company image it should be classified as discrimination. And by company image I mean dress code, etc, not what is sitting in the parking lot. Too many people gave away too many rights when they voted in the right to work laws, my state included, and we are paying the price now.

In the second link in the OP....

"Plant manager Rob Webber delivered a blunt message to workers at Ford Motor Co.'s Dearborn Truck factory this week: If you work at Ford, you better drive a Ford. Otherwise, park across the street and walk."

It's a cheap maneuver, but I don't see it as a big deal.

The lot is company property, it is company image sorry. If the lot was owned by the government I could see your case, but it is not.
