Twice i did that myself. I'm glad my new car has a plastic cable that keeps it in place.

I actually almost did that the other day. Started the car and everything. I know the girl at the gas station so as my car was filling up I was in there for about 20 minutes. When I came out I got in my car and started it, maybe even taking the e-brake off, before realizing my mistake.

I've actually seen someone do it. He forgot about the pump and started driving away. He realized it after the pump and hose detached from the station. He just got out and threw it on the floor and drove off. What a bvstard.

I just don't know how someone can do that. Here you can't pay for fuel until you put the nozzle back into the holder at the pump to register that you've finished. The only way you could drive off with the hose is if you don't pay. Astonishing!

Probably because it makes more sense to choose something to buy, then go and pay the exact amount for it. You don't exactly pay the cashier at the local grocers $100 then proceed to go off and shop. I really don't see how it's 'that' retarded.

Well, you can pay at the pump beforehand, but if you start pumping with the intentions of going in and paying, I think the machine that operates the pumps won't let you pay until you have put the nozzle up. I think this is in case someone puts in $20 worth of gas, goes in and pays, and decides to put in antoher 50 cents before putting the nozzle back to the pump and driving off.

Maybe the drivers spouce pumped the gas, didnt take it out, went to pay and got in not seeing that it was still there...

I've seen it done. The driver was a man even. Started driving off with the nozzle still in the car, and the hose popped apart at a connection made especially for that purpose.
