(My response to those that do that to me: "Who is THIS?" - you're not going to get my name until I know who you are first.)

Debt collector? That's a common tactic, to get you to admit your name before they start lambasting you.

If you want me to stop calling, just say so, you didn't have to make a whole thread about it. :(

People started asking when I was younger, around the point that my voice got deep enough to match my brother and Dad.

I'd choke a bitch for doing it to me now, though.

happens to me all the time on my work blackberry, always sounds like 80yo women who have some story to tell about how years ago it was the phone number to the market they would walk down to and blah blah blah... kinda funny sometimes

I actually used to do this often when I was 8-9 years old. There were a couple of neighbour girls I was friends with who were sisters a little older than me. I would phone them up and they'd make fun of me when something like this happened:

Them: Hello?
Me: Hi, is Diana there?
Diana: Ha, it's me silly boy. Why do you ask for me when I'm already on the phone?
Me: Well, it's hard to tell you apart from your sister with just a "Hello..."
Diana: Still, you're silly. Just start talking to me next time and don't ask for me if I'm there already...

Them: Hello?
Me: Hi, is Donna there?
Donna: Silly boy! Why do you always ask for me when I'm already on the phone? Don't you know...
Me: *$#*@*#!

So, to escape their constant ribbing whenever the person I phoned happened to be the one who picked up, I'd give them the "who's this?". It solved the problem temporarily, but then they just started saying I was rude on the phone. I think I just stopped phoning them.

I hate when I tell them wrong number and then the phone rings again right away.

So no one here has heard of the prank where you dial two friends and set up a conference call between them? Both of them start going "you dialed ME!"

I used to have this Black lady calling me all the time and then axing me who I was and what had I done with Maxine. I told her that Maxine obviously didn't pay her cell phone bill and her number was recycled.

Back before cellphones became mainstream and everyone were still using landlines, I would often get calls from friends that go like this:

Me: Hello?
Friend: Hey are you home?
Me:  Where the fuck do you think this phone is connected to?

Whenever I get a call that they start off with that or "is this lokiju?" I always respond with "who's calling?" to have the possible out of saying "he's not available right now".

It is nice to see someone carrying on the Paul Harvey tradition since he has shaken off this mortal coil.

That's the way I handle it too.

However it definitely erks(?) me but I have yet to think of a great response that will put them in their place but not be too rude in case its someone we know and don't want to offend.

"You called ME. Don't you know?"

Learn to fucking push the right buttons, Moran.

BTW, along these lines...WTF ever happened to a bit of common courtesy?

When you get a wrong number, and it happens to us all once in a while, apologize before you disconnect.

Nowadays, it seems like it's:

"Hello?"

"Is Burford there?"

"Nope, you must have the wrong number."

"Are you sure?"

"Yep, I'm sure. No Burfords here."

<click>

OR, the dumbass tries to argue with you.
