DONT CALL AREA CODE 809!!! details inside

The difference between this and 'regular' hoaxes is that it's essentially true -- the amount you can unwittingly end up owing is not as high as purported, but still, I think it's idiotic that the phone company sets up international calls like "regular" numbers without giving the customer a way to tell that they are calling a number that will end up costing them $$.

How the heck would the average consumer know whether 809 or 412 or any code is international and could be a scam or not? You could go on the net and find out, but is everyone going to do that all the time? What if it was truly an emergency?? I don't know what the area code is where my cousin lives, but I could imagine a scenario where something happens to him and I get a legit call from someone in that code (whatever it is).

This is not the first time this Scam has been pulled. AT&T knew about it the last time and did not a thing to warn their customers. They have it within their power to shut down the scam.

It'll never happen to me, and I'm sure my long-distance service provider has taken the necessary safe-gaurd against this.

You can never live in fear, odds are in your favor that "It'll never happen to you" and if something bad does happen, you are most likely not to have been warned against it.

what makes you sound SO sure of this?

"The e-mail also warns consumers that dialing the 809 area code will result in charges of $2,400 per minute. That simply isn?t true. The basic rate for a call to the Dominican Republic is less than $3 a minute although some 809 numbers terminate with pay-per-call services that permit the levy of additional fees. "

You'll lose some money. ~$3 a minute, not $2400. This is taken directly from AT&T's site.

I call shenigans.

809 follows standard US domestic routing as far as call routing is concerned. Complete BS.

ps - you'll need to dial a country code first

Bahama's (and many other carribean country/islands) share the same phone grid with the US.

there are scams that have come from 809 but it's a perfectly legitimate area code to dial if you know who you're calling.

what if u call it on a prepaid unregistered cell phone, how can they bill u...

It's quite possible that on something like that they turn off 809 dialing. That's what they do with calling cards.

Thanks for the clarification Beau. From a telecom perspective the middle digit is a 1 or 0 meaning "domestic US call". I didn't realize that carriers considered US virgin islands "domestic US"
