exactly. Why buy a ford focus when you can buy a ferrari?

well, lets see.. $30 vs $100, or $20,000 vs $200,000... bit of a difference.

also, supertool, i said DIAF, and i mean it. now go away.

well frys... lots of n00bs buy cheap on sale things...it boosts return rates thats for sure. i'm using an ecs right now. when they work, they work.when they dont they don't. its the price of cheapness.

Me too - the only "problem" would be long startup time in Windows XP (the system seems to hang for half a minute with the Starting Windows XP screen). After that (and before that) seems fast enough

For use with a 100-200$ processor, you won't find a cheaper board. Also, they work fine, and (at least the K7S5A I have) are fast

Original Install Date: 10/14/2004, 7:06:07 PM
System Up Time: 28 Days, 0 Hours, 41 Minutes, 37 Seconds

sooooo how many pages did you look through to find this thread

I actually did a search for "ECS" because I was tired of people bashing ECS for no real reason. I've built tons of systems with ECS and have never had any problems. Seriously, unless you need to overclock or need tons of bells and whistles, ECS does the job!

Go into the Device Manager, expand IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, and in the Primary and Secondary Channel menus under the Advanced Settings tab, disable any devices (from Auto Detection) that you are not using. Remember to change this setting back if you add a new drive in the future.

ECS boards have high initial failure rates, but when they work they tend to work forever rock solid stable. The biggest cause of initial "failure" IME is that ECS boards tend to require higher quality power supplies, so if you build an ECS rig with an el-cheap-o power supply (a very common event), the board tends to refuse to boot up.

edit: and yes, with the Fry's deals, the ECS boards are pretty much free. Good deals. Sometimes you get the combo for less than the price of the cpu anywhere else.

Frys/Outpost combo sales. You're pretty much getting board for free.

I wish theyd offer the other ones at a discount 😉.

there is a reason these combos are the cheapest to be found...

but, also there are a lot of people who's work fine

ill stick with Asus

Who were you before you were banned?

Look at the shelves in any Fry's store. They obviously have a huge return rate on everything they sell. That's one of the reasons cheapskates like us shop there: we know they'll take stuff back no questions asked.

I didn't touch ECS for a long time because I was concerned about their quality. I've recently built a few systems using ECS boards though, and have not had any problems. For the price paid, I think they are a very solid board.

I think the 50% return rate is also an unfairly inflated number. All Frys special combo pricing that I know of includes an ECS motherboard. This means that the majority of ppl buying motherboards from Frys are buying this sale item. New computer builders will buy the board, and return it because they either killed the board or assembled the computer wrong and assumed it didn't work. Long time builders will buy this board to hold them over until their shipment from newegg comes in, and return the board when the computer they "really" want is finished.

On combo deals, the board cannot be returned separately from the cpu. All or nothing, except to exchange a defective board.

Well my friend preordered all these parts from Frys online and I was the person who was going to build him his first 64 bit system. I get everything assembled and started to test the unit and peripherals. The seconday IDE channel was defective, I couldnt believe it. I had to tear the whole thing apart to get another mobo. I go to Frys and the guy tells me that the ECS boards have a 50% return rate. I say what the hell, why do you sell this junk. Anyways I bought an Asus board and it works great. This is the 1st time I ever had this problem with ECS, and if I build myself a new system it wont be with an ECS board.

Right, so because one person had one problem, the manufacturer should be put out of business because all of their products must have some sort of fatal flaw.

I see.

*ahem*

Please do never touch a computer part and please do never give advice in the information technology field ever again. Kthnxbye.

Just make sure you don't get an open box one. I think that's one of the things that can be responsible for the 50% return rate is that multiple people return the same mobo several times.

you, sir, are a moron. you returned it because of damage to it you made, which means it was no fault of ECS, and you are making higher prices for the rest of us. diaf.

 Thank you, Mother Theresa :light:

LOL....yeah, I'm sure he'd do the same thing if given the chance......moral elitists

I stopped buying ECS boards when 12 out of the 15 I bought for work died within 3 years. The ones that work, work fine though.

not to mention they tear open boxes that aren't even opened upon return. i've had that happen to me several times. perfectly good packaging, plastic straps and all..
