Dont buy the ECS mobo/CPU at Frys

Well my friend preordered all these parts from Frys online and I was the person who was going to build him his first 64 bit system. I get everything assembled and started to test the unit and peripherals. The seconday IDE channel was defective, I couldnt believe it. I had to tear the whole thing apart to get another mobo. I go to Frys and the guy tells me that the ECS boards have a 50% return rate. I say what the hell, why do you sell this junk. Anyways I bought an Asus board and it works great. This is the 1st time I ever had this problem with ECS, and if I build myself a new system it wont be with an ECS board.

My brothers computer has an ECS from Fry's and it works great. I have built probably 20 systems using ECS with no problems.

I used an old ECS K7VZA in a build that I gave to my sis, the board is 3+ years old and still kickin'. They're budget boards but not too bad. I've seen duds from Asus too, it happens.

I love ECS and Fry's. For our home server, I bought a KT333 board and a Sempron for $40 on my birthday and it's been up ever since then without ever crashing. The only times I've had to reboot were for Windows Updates. Here's my latest uptime, with my birthday thrown in for good measure:

Original Install Date: 10/14/2004, 7:06:07 PM
System Up Time: 28 Days, 0 Hours, 41 Minutes, 37 Seconds

sooooo how many pages did you look through to find this thread

I have an ECS mobo. and yes, I had a 50% return rate on it. I returned one, and got another one after I accidentally hooked up the cables wrong and fried the USB controller.
Just make sure you don't get an open box one. I think that's one of the things that can be responsible for the 50% return rate is that multiple people return the same mobo several times.

Wow my son's ECS board has been good for a year or two no issues.

He does need a new video card thoguh.

you, sir, are a moron. you returned it because of damage to it you made, which means it was no fault of ECS, and you are making higher prices for the rest of us. diaf.

i had *two* ECS K7S5A motherboards that did not recognize the video adapter. i tried two different video cards (AGP) to no avail. that was truly a disappointment, so i went with MSI instead, and well, in december, my motherboard exploded in flames when it was in idle state (if you're interested, the thread is here somewhere)

That's nothing. The PCChips / Duron combo I got at frys runs fine, but the board does not have any Power LED pins. 😕

i think that board single handedly brought SiS back from the dead. not that they have done tons since, but still

Yup...used it on my first build with a 1700+ Palomino. That thing is a classic. Still holds a chunk of it's value thanks to being able to take SDRAM.

Via KM266 boards can still take SD and DDR, but they're nowhere nearly as common as those pesky Sis chispet boards 😉

exactly. Why buy a ford focus when you can buy a ferrari?
