I bought a Sony 5 disc cd changer back in 1992 for $250. Yes. $250. Also bought a set of Advent 25th Anniversary two way tower speakers for $250 the same day. Awesome purchase. Still have those speakers.

My dad has been using it for the last 10 years. He just retired it in favor of a Sony 300 disc changer. The old one works fine.

It seems really trendy to trash Sonys name and their product these days but you bought a "cheapo" system and from your message I am assuming subjected it to sustained heavy use. If this is the case then I dont agree with the "Don't buy a Sony HT" sentiment.

Its trendy because most of their stuff either sucks, or is overpriced.
so whats so good about Sony? they have absolutely zero things I want. Oh, I do actually like their headphones. but I dont know of much else.

Better than spending a couple grand on a Bose system and wondering why it sucks.
What do you base your thoughts of Bose on? Join the bandwagon on AT or something?

You guys *all* make it sound like Bose is worse than the $20 stuff at Wal*Mart or something! Bose isn't that bad... not by a stretch. Bose, IMO, isn't bad at all - overpriced? Sure, but some of you guys make it seem like Bose isn't worth $5.

They are a step above some of the stuff out there, especially in comparison to Sony sets like this. For many people, they want Bose, they don't really care about getting the best they can for their money because it doesn't matter - they just want what they perceive to be good. Ignorance can be bliss.

Will I ever recommend Bose? Not really, if it's what they want and don't want to consider other stuff, then sure, be happy with your purchase! If you will be happy with Bose, by all means, go get it - however if you buy it knowing you won't be happy, well, that's your issue.

OP - just how loud were you listening to it? By the time you get it turned up to a point where it's stressing the amp or anything close to that, it should sound more like noise that bugs you than music. I would compare it to those fuzzy blocked out channels on TV.

Even without that extended warranty - you bought a product and are using it for its intended purpose, Sony should have put a limiter somewhere if it would damage it or fall outside of the intended purpose of the product. It failed at that and so legally, you have the power. You should not have to buy extended warranties for these issues.

It's no use. that's the bandwagon. half teh people who make these claims just make them because they read some person's post on some other message board. Chances are that post was based on another post that was written on another message board. The only person on this board that I have actualy seen actually attempt to back up their claims is YOyoYOhowsDAjello.

Agreed, for audio - him, Howard, Spidey07, MS Dawn, and then a few of the other DIY'ers that I don't remember right now are the folks I listen to on this board. There are plenty of people who know their stuff as well that just avoid these discussions, I didn't avoid listing you guys on purpose just fyi 😉

I know audiophiles will give crap to Bose, but that's expected, it's overpriced - however when you think about it from another point of view, it might not be as bad as people make it out to be, which is what I point out. I'm sick of the folks that just jump on the wagon and bash it away whenever they get a chance. I figure some of them don't have stuff even close to Bose, they just say whatever they can, kind of an indirect form of jealousy that's a bit subconcious within themselves.

No matter that they don't know what they're talking about, but Bose IS bad. Their tactics are unethical and all they do is advertise falsely. Bose isn't a company like Sony that makes some good high-end products. Bose makes no product worth buying. Sure it doesn't sound that bad compared to cheap solutions, but at that price range, it's ridiculous.

These posters may not necessarily be able to back up why Bose is bad. But Bose IS bad. And they're not lying like Bose is. They just may not know what they're talking about.

Well for me, I think BOSE sounds OK... but certainly not for the price. I just hate how they are marketed to be the godsend of all speakers when in reality they don't sound that great. It's like Bose tries to rip people off. I mean, if one is going to spend $2K on Bose speakers, I believe most any other option would be money better spent. I don't know the technical details and all that, but I do know that Bose just doesn't sound that great to me, and then when I look at the price, I end up with the "fvck bose" remarks.

What's so unethical about it? How do they advertise falsely? if any other company had a name like Bose *cough* Apple *cough*, they would do the same exact thing: use their name as a selling point.

Like giantpinkbunnyhead said, Bose makes it sound like they're ultra high-end. Which they aren't. They're essentially trying to rip people off. Instead of investing their money into R&D, they spend it on advertising so they can create an image that they're high-end. They succeed purely on marketing. When their actual speakers and products are broken down, you can see just how junky they are.

The link on YOyo's sig sums it up pretty nicely. If you haven't read it, you must. And yes, I've actually listened to Bose gear. Not all of their products but several.

Even without that extended warranty - you bought a product and are using it for its intended purpose, Sony should have put a limiter somewhere if it would damage it or fall outside of the intended purpose of the product. It failed at that and so legally, you have the power. You should not have to buy extended warranties for these issues.

Not taking anything away from your argument, I certainly appreciate it fully and agree up to a point. I would say my argument is akin to someone buying a cheap car and driving it around at redline all day. Of course its going to wear at a much quicker rate and you are risking damage. As far as limiting the performance so as to avoid situations like this, isnt that what happened? The system went into protect mode.

The difference between a company like Sony and a company like Bose is that with Sony's "crap" line, you know it's their "crap" line. Sony also has a "high-end" line which, hate the company or not, can be worth buying. Bose only has a "crap" line but they pretend it's a "high-end" line.

I cant comment on the first part of your argument because I dont have much knowledge of "most of their stuff" nor its competition. As far as being overpriced, if its selling then people are willing to pay it. If they wanted to sell more they would drop the price, so I cant comment on that. I do however have several Sony products and dont ever recall being disappointed with any of them.

Also, how can you claim that most of their stuff sucks or is overpriced then go on to say you like their headphones, "but dont know of much else."

If I read your post without my post as context I would put you in the 'its trendy to bash sony so Im going to do it' group as well.

All it said was protect, or did it do something?

And I agree on what you're saying, just thought I'd point out the law's stance on this regarding purpose of the product.

Gotta agree with you there. Their high end CD players, headphones, and TV's are pretty good though I think that you end up paying a premium for their TV's.

Hey, this is supposed to be a "sony sucks" thread, not a "bose sucks" thread 😛

Oh, and btw, the onkyo set that I said was $199 is actually $169 for club onkyo members 😀

You can never have too many inputs 😀

You get what you pay for when it comes to Sony audio systems And thats what $200 gets you. Also the first sign of a crappy audio system is the RMS power is not listed.

PS- Bose sucks
