Why didn't they just use tranquilizer darts or a tazer? That looked like it could have gotten *really*ugly for the victim esp. when he was lodged inbetween the pole(?) and the car - yes, I do realize that he was waving a knife around in a (relatively) threatening manner, and I'm sure some choice words were exchanged, but the fact that a police officer, not some redneck hick, used a car as a weapon somehow bothers me . . ..

I've never heard of police using tranquilizer darts. I would expect them to use SOME less-lethal tactic, though, like beanbag rounds or a tazer.

Tranquilizers can cause allergic reactions leading to death. Since you know nothing about any particular perp, how the fvck can this be done?

Beanbag rounds sound like a good idea to me - don't get me wrong, the police did what they needed to do, and it's kinda cool on a "this one time . . .." incident, but at the same time, I think it was a bit reckless of the police to use a two-ton (of course I'm embellishing) vehicle as a weapon to subdue a perp.

Again, like others posted, I don't know all the options that were availble to the police officers, but this seems like it wasn't the *only* option.

But then again, this *is* a country full of drug addicts, apparently.

pretty damn funny.. for some reason reminded me of those new cobal comercials.. with cars bouncing the ball around.. would be funny if they have a couple cop cars going at this guy..

pwnlice!

Baton rounds, stinger rounds or beanbags all would have been effective, although the clothing he was wearing may have reduced the effectiveness of Less Lethal rounds. There is a general rule called the 21 foot when dealing with someone with a knife, and that means a suspect can close 21 feet in about the time an officer can react, draw and fire on such a suspect. With weapons drawn, that number is reduced, but there still is a small gap when reacting and putting rounds on target.

Its hard to tell because the perspective is distorted with longer focal length lenses, but it did appear he was close to or came within 21 feet of one of the officers. Not knowing what the mindset was, or if the suspect was under the influence of any kind of drug or not, I think it goes to show the dangers LEO face on a regular basis, and how quickly an incident can turn into a tragedy. I feel the use of the car was proper and a good use of available tools to end the incident. I am not LEO, so my opinion is worth what you paid for it... 😀

21 foot only works the the person has to draw a weapon and unaware of an oncomming attacker. These police already had their weapons drawn and are watching very closely.

i thought they killed him at first

f-in idiots lol

i would have liked to seeone of thos non-lethal shotgun things shot at him

Its tough to be a cop these days.. everyone is a critic when you're dealing with lethal situations.

Yeah, and if the cops had used something non-lethal SOMEONE would have been up in arms about the mistreatment of the guy.

I bet those cops didn't have anything nonlethal or it was not easily available. I agree with others in that the car was a good way to deal with the situation.

to all those beating up on the Toronto Police:

the only non-lethal stuff they carry is pepper spray and baton.

Tazers are under review here due to the deaths of suspects.

Seriously, a knife is not going to take out 5 or more police officers. Usually these situations can be dealt with without resorting to lethal force. I think using the cruiser was a great idea.

Hell our most famous Mountie, Sam Steel, enforced the law in the gold rush days without ever using his side arm.

possible lawsuit, depending on the actions and level of threat of the perp beforehand. If someone doesn't drop a knife, it doesn't necessarily mean cops should attempt to run him over.

He had to be stopped and the police have plenty of leeway.

Wandering around outside, with a knife and making a general nuisance of himself requires he be apprehended. He resisted arrest which means it is now at the police's discression on how the matter will be handled.

As Harry Callahan said: "I am all broke up about that man's rights."

Some of you think that Canada is like the states when it comes to law enforcement. Its not.

You have only 2 rights when you are arrested here. The right to remain silent and the right to council. That is it.
