Donnie Darko Soundtrack -- recommendations (now a general singer/songwriter thread)

I just grabbed a copy of Gary Jules' Trading Snakeoil for Wolftickets based on how good his cover of Mad World (Donnie Darko soundtrack) was. Just figured I'd recommend it to anyone here: it's got a Cat Stevens feeling to it, and is a VERY good CD.

You must listen to KMTT too The cover really worked, just like when Tori Amos slowed down "Smells Like Teen Spirit."

I'll have to think about getting it when I order the new Peter Himmelman, Joanatha Brooke and Grant Lee Phillips CDs. It's been a good winter for singer-songwriter new releases.

FYI you might like Grant Lee Buffalo - Mighty Joe Moon, and Teddy Thompson's self-titled debut (www.AllMusic.com for more on them).

I'd highly recommend Josh Ritter if you like the singer/songwriter genre. He was very good opening up for Martin Sexton in concert.

Yep, both Gary Jules and Josh Ritter are great. I have both of the GJ LPs and they're both fantastic (although they aren't available in stores... you have to buy them from his site). I saw Josh Ritter open for Joan Baez and he had some great songs. Reminds me a bit of Nick Drake.
