Hate to say this, but maybe's it's just broken. It can happen, you know :).

Can you hear any motor running at all? Is there any 'attempt' by the drive to spin the disc?

If the power cables have no lose pins in any of the molex connectors, interface cable is good, then closely examine the spinup motor ribbon cable inside the drive. Unlatch the retainer tabs on each side of the socket, pull out the ribbon cable, inspect for clean undamaged contact strips, reinsert fully and relock the retainer tabs. You may want to do this to all 3 ribbon cables in the drive. You may also want to slide the read head back and forth on the guides to make sure it isnt bound up and that no linkages are loose.I am assuming the tray opens and closes fully and normally. Reassemble and test. If it doesnt work then, its probably defective. Kenwood wasnt the most reliable drive made.

i only saw 2 ribbons inside the drive...

anyway, i disconnected them, and reconnected them. the drive does try to spin up, but doesn't make it. it's almost as though there isn't enough juice to spin it. as far as the laser thingy, i made sure it glides back and forth. there is nothing wrong with my power suply or the ide cable. in fact, the laser thing actually glides to the right position once i insert a cd (i did this with the casing off the drive), but the cd doesn't spin up to full speed. it tries to start like i mentioned, but just gives up.

Is sounds like the drive is doing what it is supposed to do then, all the way up to reading the TOC of the disk. If it sees nothing it wont spin to full speed and will just stop as though no cd was in the drive. My guess, as long as the disks are good you are using is that the read head is bad... just a guess.

is this only with one cd, or have you tried more, is it a cd-r or a retail cd, try it with a retail, as kenwoods were known to dislike cd-r's
