What happens when your dSLR is in the other room, your baby is doing something cute, and your cell phone is in your pocket? That's the point. Or you're trying to hold the baby in one hand and the dSLR & flash in the other? Hehehe. Trust me, it gets complicated fast

Sure. That's true.

Fuji X100?

Leica M9 😎
the fact you want good video makes it pretty tough

Exactly. I would have really liked the new Fuji one but its video killed the deal.

Plus the required min. distance of the lens you have on the camera.

The new Fuji is bigger than the M9. Might as well get the real deal.

Who says you have to have one camera? My 5D II is not what I consider portable - so it's not used as one. I'm currently buying and selling a bunch of stuff in order to finalise the best Matrushka camera stack for me. Once I'm done with the current round of evals I'll be done for a few years. Looking particularly forward to the SLT-A99 (or whatever it'll be called - traditional DSLR's can go away as far as I'm concerned, though not for reasons of bulk).

I just use the S95 that is always in its case on my belt; a lot better image than any telephone. I don't really think either/or is necessary. I use the DSLR often, and the S95 Daily.

S'truth is, I used to keep a loaded Trip 35 sitting around for just these occasions. Nothing is faster...

I have an ancient nikon d40 (very compact dslr) and found it heavy. I totally understand the weight. I am going to the M43 format too. I have my eye on the G3.

originally, I wanted to get the gf3, but i want more control.

When you're ready to dump that ancient/heavy D40, let me know.

not dumping it. keeping it with the 35mm f/1.8 and 18-55mm +sb-400.

i dropped the d40 big time. the built-in flash doesn't work anymore. i think i would sell it if you okay with that. everything for let say $500. got all the filters too.

I finally sold off my 5D and lenses and have an X100 coming tomorrow. I opted away from the X-Pro 1 as it's just too expensive. In a year or two we'll probably have amazing choices, with Pentax, Samsung and Olympus reportedly developing high-end mirrorless systems. In the meantime the X100 seemed like the only choice for me for a compact, larger sensor, fast lens camera. I'm not crazy about shelling $1100 for a possibly flawed beta product, but hopefully this camera will fill my needs and retain some resale value long enough for the next gen.

I doubt the resale will be great. Just about any first gen electronic device suffers from that. I remember my friend bought one of those camcorders that recorded to CF cards when they first came out. We were overseas in the Navy too. Don't think they were even in the US yet. He paid some crazy amount for it. LOL

IMO, anything that can't fit into a pants pocket is too big to be a "carry-everywhere" camera. Technology has come far enough that a compact camera can produce "good enough" photos and allow me to focus on doing vacation activities instead of babysitting a camera. I still have my DSLR though, it just doesn't go as many places as my phone.

I have a DSLR and a Canon S95 for this reason. The vast majority of the time, I honestly use the S95. It's smaller, far more portable, and takes good enough shots. I have my DSLR for occasions when I want to take better shots and it'll be appropriate/possible to have something as large as a DSLR. As much as I like my S95, the DSLR is still a better picture taker.

This gives me portability and ease of photo taking, while also being able to take higher quality pictures when I want to.

i've enjoyed using the 5n. i use older glass with it and have found a great amount of balance, control and quality out of a smaller size camera.
i haven't run into jpeg processing issues.

Yes.

I went on a trip recently and while I brought my DSLR I actually didn't bother with it, instead preferring to use the under 1 megapixel camera at the end of my iPod touch. Yes, the 720p camera this thing has.

If you use a panoramic software suite, you can get a good 5 megapixel image using the thing.

I do feel your pain. I find that the S95 is great for family snaps, and I always have it with them. I do find that the DSLR is used more since I got the R Strap (Christmas gift), as it is more out of the way when carrying, and ready to use almost instantly (carried without lens cap, and always on).

interesting. I do vaguely remember looking into it a while back, figured it was a little too annoying to use alongside a backpack.

The intro DSL's with a 35 prime on them are pretty damn small and light. Not really a burden at all unless you're in a nightclub or bar. In that case bust out the iphone.

I love my Sony NEX-5... but then again I was moving up from a crappy point and shoot. With the 16mm lense it fits comfortably in cargo pants pockets.

Battery life is great and the HD video was fine for my purposes.

I guess the time has come for me. I sold not only the camera but also all the lenses, flash, shutter release...etc.

I recall once telling somebody here that I carry 5d + 24-70mm L all the time when I go outside and I don't consider them heavy. Things have changed since then: I found DSLR setup to be heavy and damn annoying for my need.

I thought about getting NEX 5n or 7 but its lack of lenses and terrible JPEG processing stopped me from finalizing the deal. (Come on, Sony. I know people has made fun of you for showing much noise but it's better to show noise than smearing the hell out of pixels. At least, provide an option to turn that damn thing off.)

Since I want both picture and video quality, it's hard to find a right camera since it doesn't exist. Rumored Fuji mirrorless sounds sweet but I've got no expectation on it since Fuji is currently doing very poorly in video world.
I guess my only hope is Panasonic GH3 that should be due soon.

Oh well, is anyone here on the same boat as me?

The x100 sensor is the same size as typically found in DSLRs. The X10 and the superzoom camera have a sensor that's only slightly bigger than a typical compact has.

It's 2x as big and the lens looks like about 2x the area vs a normal superzoom like my HX1. Sounds like a nice compromise since you get 26x zoom and 624mm equivalent. It's ugly as sin though. The rubberized body makes it look cheap.

I haven't seen the XS-1, but the ~$300 HS20, which is the previous-gen range-topper (and has similar styling / materials) actually feels a lot better built than many a <$1K entry-mid DSLR. Since they advertise build quality as a particular feature of the XS, I wouldn't be surprised if it felt like a >$1K DSLR in terms of general 'body feel'.
