Hey guys, I just finished building my comp but the fan on my HSF (Arctic Cooler Pro 7) isnt spinning. It started to spin up then suddenly stopped. Also while installing Vista how do I go about splitting my HD (500 GB) into 2 250 GB partitions? I clicked (new) and did one, do I have to do it twice?

Thanks!

Update: I installed Vista on a partition of 250 GB but I didn't do it twice, now I cant find my other 250 GB. How do I get it back?

Fan: try plugging it into a different jack on the motherboard. Might need to be replaced. Does the stock cooler work (if you bought retail)?

HD: In WinXP you could partition the drive in the install. You delete all partitions, then define two drives each for 250gb or so. It doesn't assume you want the other half partitioned; you have to tell it to do that or else it will leave unpartitioned space.

I figured the partition problem out but I still cant get the HSF CPU to spin, could it be the CPU just isnt hot enough yet?

No idea about the stock cooler, my case is all neat right now (which took FOREVER with the Antec P180) so I am gonna try and find a setting for the HSF in bios or something before trying to change the fan.

What is the best mode to run the fan on:
Auto
Intel QST
Legacy
Disable?

If the machine is on, the fan on the CPU needs to spin. Period. There is no, "just isn't hot enough yet". Otherwise, it WILL get hot enough and you will no longer have a chip!!

Try plugging that fan into another outlet, or try another fan in the socket you are currently plugging your CPU fan into. You need that fan to spin or you will kill your new machine!

The fan only spins when I click disable to Smart Fan settings, is this the best option? This just means my fan will run full blast all the time, is that good?

Well that means there's nothing wrong with your fan. The bios was trying to control it, but i guess there's some problem with the bios. You can download speedfan to control the fan speed via software, so its not running full blast all the time.

This is a known issue with the DS3. Update your BIOS to the latest version. If that still doesn't work, disable the fan speed controller. It'll spin faster and be a bit louder, but it won't hurt anything.

Your other partion is currently completely empty, it's not even formatted to NTFS, so Windows won't see it. There's several good partitioning programs out there that'll do this for you a lot easier. Parition Magic is a good one.

I updated to F10 and it still wont spin on anything besides "disabled" setting for fan control :(.

Also, I have the Antec P180 case and I have plugged the front audio ports into the mobo but I still can not hear anything out of them. Is there a driver update for this? It seems like the gigabyte website doesnt have anything that runs well on Vista.

Is there a program that works well for temperature monitoring on Vista as well?

Sorry about all the questions, my first build in a long time and having some really weird problems :(. Thanks for the help though!

My front audio panel doesn't work properly with that motherboard either. I'm assuming it's a design flaw.

Coretemp is your best bet for monitoring temps, or Speedfan. TAT still doesn't work correctly.

Ah man I was really looking forward to being able to use that front panel. Were you able to get your CPU working? If so, what BIOS? Thanks a ton :)

I use the S3, not the DS3. I just disable the fan speed controller and let it run full blast the entire time. I don't hear it over the 120MM fan in my Rosewill PSU anyway :)

This is not at all true. All modern (p4 up and K8 up) have an on die thermistor that will prevent them from going up in smoke if the fan doesn't spin for whatever reason. It takes the fan on my stock cooler takes about a minute or so to start spinning after it's been off overnight. I'm using a e6300 on a S3 motherboard.

if you have a freezer 7 pro then unless you disable smartfan the fan will cut on an d off when it wants too , i have watched coretemp when it does this and the processor at least in my case was in no danger whatsoever. never got above 33c, although with disabled it stays closer to ambient @ about 23c.

Just leave the thing alone and leave smartfan on with coretemp open and set your refresh way short, then watch the fan will kick on eventually probably less than a few minutes, or immediately if you run superpi or something similiarly. I am betting your fan works fine as I have a gigabyte dq6 and was shocked by this upon initial boot as well.

Same for me the fan will only run after the processer warms up and then it be on and off in quick cycles for another min or so. The rig in my sig has been this way for 6 months and runs 58c at the worst using smart fan and I like the quiet :D Of course this is very seldom a problem for me as I run 24/7 folding and it never cools off

Hey Guys, I just ran 3DMark 06 and I scored a 10,130 running my GTS @ 630 / 975

my problem seems to be my CPU, I was BARELY hitting 1 FPS during that CPU test. My CPU score is 2677.. isn't that a bit low?

CPU Tests
CPU1 - Red Valley 0.849 FPS

CPU2 - Red Valley 1.35 FPS

No, that is normal for the CPU tests. A CPU is a horrible device for rendering, and those tests show it.

Your score is fantastic. I don't see any problem... (I get about the same with an 8800GTS 640, FWIW, maybe a couple hundred points more, but pretty close.)

Thanks a ton, I just reset my Video card to default speeds (576 / 850) and score dropped to 9451 . I guess I need to leave it bumped up.
