Is this true? Where would the second rebate be found?

I believe the 2nd $50 rebate only applies to NEW DirecTV customers.

While there is a $50 rebate on Tivo's site for NEW DirectTV customers, it's only if you buy a Tivo Series2 DVR which Does NOT include the Hughes model being sold at CC.

Ah good catch, thanks 🙂

I bought two of them (one with cash first) and one with a credit card. When I handed him cash for the first one he told me he needed a credit card to swipe before he could ring it out. I seriously doubt you are going to be able to buy it without the credit card swipe (there will be a couple exceptions - like the guy that got the expired rebate back in cash at the register). Now hypothetically, if your entire objective is to resell these and you have a credit card with no balance, you could use it for the swipe, pay cash or some other form and then when you get home cancel the card. I'm not condoning this, just surprised no one else mentioned it. Bottom line:

1) If you have services and you want one, it's a mute point, buy it and activate it and get the extra 12 months.

2) If you are stealing service, might as go all the way and steal the unit or use a stolen credit card, afterall your already a thief.

3) If you have nothing better to do than sell them on Ebay for $200, good luck. I prefer the hotdeals going to people who need and want the stuff, not for resale. But maybe that's just me.

I bought 1 yesterday with CASH* The guy who sold it said the credit card is for DirectTV to charge you $150 if you DO NOT ACTIVATE the Unit after 30 Days of Perchase..*!*!*!* The asked for Info as to were the Unit will be and were the Service is,They swipe the card and I payed Cash and Out the door I went...There was a $50 MIR printed and a 1 Year Contract Agrrement Form*!*

The Key here is the 30 Day Activation *!* or $150 Charge..*!*

EDIT: Now this is only what I was Told by the sales Rep....

There is NOTHING to worry about if you are a DTV customer and want to stay one, and want to sell this thing. You need to follow these directions to launder your DirecTivo:

1) Buy it.
2) Activate it. Sure you are going to have a new 12 month contract, but who cares. You are telling DTV that you will sub at the minimum package for a year. They couldn't care less how many receivers you have. You were going to be paying DTV anyway for 12 months.
3) Pay the additional $4.99 for one month.
3) Cancel the service to the DirecTivo.
4) Sell it on Ebay to a pirate. You will make money. A comitment free DirecTivo is worth money.

I have nothing to worry about except for 3 things I'm unsure of:

1) The DirecTV is in our roommate's name and AFAIK we don't have the total choice programming. He recently purchased a DirecTivo ($99 FFDVR deal). So will we be charged $5 or $10 for two DirecTivo's?

2) Will his getting in on the $99 FFDVR deal ruin my chances for activating this? Maybe since DTV is in his name he should activate both these units?

3) There is a good chance we're going to need a splitter I'm not sure which one to purchase though. Read my post here dated Oct/02/2003 8:44 AM which states

A multiswitch is basically a sophisticated splitter. If you have more than 1 receiver, or if you want to run two satellite feeds into your Tivo (which I highly recommend for watching and recording at the same time), you'll need a multiswitch. You just run the feed directly from the satellite to the switch, then typically there are outputs for 4 feeds that you would run to the receivers. There are also ones with 8 outputs if you need that many. Also, I would recommend hunting around online for a good price, like from eBay. RadioShack will rip you off. >>

Our DirecTV has 4 outputs which are configured:
1 Living room TV
2 Other room
1 Our TV

Since we only have 1 we cannot record and watch live TV at the same time. I can record and watch a previously recorded at the same time though.

Do I need a 4 or 8 output splitter?

So I don't get ripped off what brand/models do you recommend and what should I search for on eBay?

Also FourDoor posted a link to a very helpful LNB and MULTISWITCH FAQ's.

no, you don't have to

This is true if you hack, but that is illegal. If you do not hack and do not have a phone line, you will get error messages up the butt like Danzilla says.

About the legality part, I don't think you know what you are talking about. I have a DirecTV Total Choice plus service with 3 receivers and i'm paying for all three. None of them gets any phone line hooked up and i have never seen any error msg or whatsoever. I have had the service for almost two years and the phone lines have never been hooked up.

WELL, with basic DirectTIVO at least, if you don't plug in the phone line it gives you warning messages daily (after a week or so) and eventually does stop working (after a month or so). The DirecTV service isn't affected though.

Then DirecTIVO sucks. I'm using UltimateTV (8.95/month) and i don't need a phone line, i have never seen any error msg

RossMAN,

You have nothing to worry about.

1) Total Choice it the bottom package, Your roomate cannot have any lower. I do know of several people that were sucessful at getting locals only at $4.99 a month, but this is a YMMV.

2) The account owner will have to do the activating. His activation will release you of your Circuit obligation, if any, but he will be commited to 12 months with DTV.

3) Since the DirecTivo has two tuners, you will need two antenna runs per DirecTivo. You will need a minimum of a 4-way multiswitch. You will need more if you have additional receivers. Multiswitches can be optained anywhere like BB or CC, I even saw one at Wal-Mart. Sure RadioShack sells them, but they are overpriced. Ebay has some good ones available at a reasonable price. You are safe to go with an unpowered unit for a 4-way, but I would go powered if I exceeded 4 outputs. I have a 12-way powered multiswitch.

Eagle, ChannelMaster are brand names that I can think of.

From circuit city they have 2 dishes BTW... for a tivo you need 2 feeds to beable to record 2 shows at once or watch one and record another. The 2 dishes are the Terk S2 which is the standard 2 feed dish, basically it can run 2 receivers or 1 tivo unit. The other dish is a the Terk S26 that one has 4 outputs and can run 4 receivers, 3 receivers + one tivo, or 2 tivos. With a one room system you get the S2 dish... with a dual room system with tivo or a 3 room system without tivo you get the S26.

If you have ever considered tivo and directv THIS is the time to do it for sure. A 2 room system 1 tivo 1 standard receiver gets you the better dish, costs $149 upfront and you get ALL of that back through rebates. Typically this same system costs $249 /w $100 rebate to bring it to $149.

If you have the older dish your better off buying the Terk S26 instead of a 2x4 multiswitch.. its $99, but it also has 4 outputs and it supports everything like hi-def receivers if you ever want to go that way, the old dish doesnt support that.

CC + Ultimate have about the same deal, Tho I know if you get a 2 room setup /w tivo, CC will give you the S26 dish with 4 outputs, it's $149 before tax for one tivo one standard, and then you get $50GC rebate, $50 rebate for tivo, and $100 rebate for 2 room system. You actually make $50.

Geeze, little touchy here. You go on what you see, I'll go on what I see. I have had mine on a phone line for the last year or so. Prior to that I got the non-sucessfull phone call message. DTV/TIVO has done some changes to the way that Tivo service is activated on these units. It used to be on the hard disk, not it is a part of the card programming, like the UTV. Maybe this has changed things.

Seriously though, lighten up dude.

I think I screwed up ... when I purchased the DirecTivo I used my credit card, name and address but the DTV service is in my roommate's name.

What should I do?

I think he's going to call DirecTV and see if they say it's ok or not.

Return it and rebuy it with the New contract Info in His name*!* They can't stop you from doing that*!* That way you are not bound in any thing,Directtv may just let you activate that Serial#ed TIVO UNIT with his account, thats all they are looking for ...RIGHT is the Unit to be activated to a Legit account for 1 year ....I don't see how you then would be bound to a contract for that unit as it would be registerd to your roomates billing info....

I'd rather give it a try first before having to return and having him re-buy it.

As long as he has the physical unit there and can provide the serial # I don't see what the big deal is, right?

Pretty much, but make sure you contact them. But check your receipt, and make sure the package was DTV Exsisting not DTV New... if it was DTV new you have to sign up for service or their going to charge you.

The Series 2 DirecTiVos (HDVR2 and DSR7000s) will complain once a week after 14 days that it has not been able to make a call. It doesn't stop your receiver from working, it just posts a message to you once a week..

The clumsy CC sales rep did ask if I was an EXISTING DTV customer? I said yes. So hopefully he keyed that information into the register.

I don't have my CC receipt with me here at work but it's at home. My wife should be home in about 30 minutes.

Where exactly on the receipt does it show if I am NEW DTV or existing DTV?

If you said yes you should be fine, but it would be the first line of the same... would be PKG DTVEXSISTING.

Some key points I wanted to share:

1. The DTivo unit WILL NEED TO CALL at least once via the phone line for activation. (If you really don't have a phone line to activate it with, there are a couple work arounds such as the serial cable method or bringing the DTivo unit to a friends house to activate. You can read up on tivocommunity if you really must go that route. But I think spending 10minutes initially with the phone line plugged in shouldnt be a problem for most people)

2. The DTivo (series 2) units DO NOT REQUIRE A PHONE LINE TO FUNCTION. You can unplug the DTivo unit and use it as normal just as long as you have a VALID subscription with DTV. People in tivocommunity have reported not having theire HDVR2s plugged in the phone line for months with no problem. The only problem you will encounter is that you will not be able to buy PPVs and you will receive a daily nag screen asking you to plug in the phone line.

3. Activating any NEW ACCESS CARD/RECEIVER will automatically renew your contract with DTV for 1 yeat.

4. And to the people who got the CC deal on the HDVR2 as a NEW customer, you should have had 2 rebates print out. 1. For the $50 MIR for the HDVR2, and a second one for NEW customer 1 room install.

5. Lastly just to avoid more confussion. DirecTV calls the DTivo's "DirecTV DVRs". This includes the Sony SAT-T60, Philips DSR6000, Hughes HDVR2, Philips DSR7000, and whatever other models I left out.

And as for RossMan: Key to your situation is to make sure that Circuit City rung up your sale as an EXISTING customer. If not, then you may have to do a return buy and place your room mates info. I would call 1800DirecTV to find out exactly just to make sure you dont get charged for the non activation fee.
