Oh the pain. After all the trouble of ordering through DirectTV for the last $99 deal and scheduling installation and then getting cancelled and having to reschedule, etc, etc... Now this deal. Considering my GF bought me one for close to $300 a month ago this is pretty damn hot though.

This REQUIRES directv, you cannot use it with over the air or with cable or dish or anything else. Just so you know...

According to the user agreement, you can use it if you already subscribe too. :) Well, I now have 5 Directivo HDVR2's and will dump my two 1st gen Directivo's.

Am I required to buy the tivo service also?

I already have a replaytv and I"m happy with it, but for 50 bucks I wouldn't mine another one, cuts back on space.

do you have to be DTV customer (new or current) to buy this? Or CC will charge you fee if you do not activate with DTV in 30 days?

If you have Directv, the Tivo service is $5 a month per account. It doesn't matter if you have 1 or 6 Tivos, it is still $5 for as many as you want in your house. So you do need to purchase the service, but it is a heck of a lot better than the $13 a month or $300 for lifetime. :)

That's wht I want to konw. I'm dtv customer but I've notice costco sell tivos too and I didn't see any labels on it saying there was month service fee. Nor does the circuit city website mention anything about it. For the replaytvs they clearly have a row about Service charge. Obviously the replay 5500 series is free of a service charge has the price already includes one.

50 bucks is cool an all but i'm not willing to shell out another 5 bucks a month.

Plus I don't know if its HU card compatible. I've read newer ones don't take those so I don't want to be stiffed buying it and not being able to use it. Yes I could return it but then I just wasted my entire time.

No need in it being HU card compatible since it will ship with a P4 that will work just fine. That is unless you are stealling service and that should not be discussed here.

It is $5 per month unless you have Total Choice, in which case they throw it in free. You do not have to be a DTV customer to buy this but it would be quite useless without DTV service since I do not think you can use it any other way.

What is a series 2 DirecTivo? What will it do different than a Phillips DSR6000? The only reason I would want a series 2 Tivo is for the Home Media Option, that is not available on DirecTivo.

Oops...I take it back:

DIRECTV ANNUAL PROGRAMMING COMMITMENT AGREEMENT

Thank you for choosing to purchase DIRECTV System equipment. By signing this Annual Programming Commitment Agreement, Customer (hereafter referred to as "I"/"me"/"you"/"your") agrees to abide by the following terms and conditions. This Agreement is in consideration of your purchase of System equipment at the promotional price reflected on your sales receipt.

PROGRAMMING COMMITMENT:

Within 30 days of purchase of your DIRECTV System equipment, you agree to activate any DIRECTV(R) TOTAL
CHOICE(R) programming package or a DIRECTV PARA TODOS(R) OPCION EXTRA ESPECIAL(R) programming package (valued at $33.99 per month or above), Phoenix TV, or Jadeworld programming package.

The programming package must be maintained for a period of twelve (12) consecutive months (without interruption)
for each DIRECTV System purchased by you, including additional DIRECTV Receivers ($4.99 per month per additional receiver as long as all receivers are connected to the same phone line). After you have fulfilled your twelve (12) month agreement to the required programming package, you are not obligated to continue your subscription of DIRECTV(R) programming for any specific duration. Existing DIRECTV customers may activate additional receivers with their existing DIRECTV(R) programming package.

CONSEQUENCES OF YOUR FAILURE TO MAINTAIN PROGRAMMING
COMMITMENT:

If you fail to activate your DIRECTV System equipment within 30 days of purchase date, you agree that DIRECTV may charge you a fee of one hundred fifty U.S. Dollars ($150.00), as liquidated damages, per DIRECTV System that is not activated, and if you fail to maintain and pay for twelve (12) consecutive months of the required programming package, you agree that DIRECTV may charge you a prorated fee of up to one hundred fifty U.S. dollars ($150.00). You authorize DIRECTV to charge the credit card you provide as part of your programming commitment (for web sales, at the time of equipment purchase) to pay for these charges (where applicable).

I am almost positive that this receiver (or any DTivo) does not support HMO without hacking.

I know this. So what is different? The only thing that I can find that is different is "Future Expandability". This means little to me, since I have had useless ports on all of the DVRs that I have owned. This is a good deal, but I do not see the reason to buy this if you already have a series 1 DirecTivo. Too much hassle.

Are the series 2 units quiteter?" The stock Phillips units are too loud to be used in bedrooms.

Everytime you change equipement with DTV, you are singing a 12 month contract. Keep this in mind.

Just saw the same 12 month min requirement for online purchase.

What if you purchase in store with cash?
Do they still require a credit card, and a contract, with in store purchase?

They are forced by law to make you sign an agreement and I heard that they force you to swipe a credit card even if you pay cash

Hmm...now I wonder. I already ordered the one directly from DTV with the friends&family plan for $99. I wanted to get this one for my parents. I wonder if I can use activating the other one to count for this one and then give it to my parents for XMas...sneaky but it should work.

Because I've been getting mixed answers. the store that sold me the hdtv equipment said no I don't have to. If I just wanted to use till my contract was up and be done with it.

directv on the other hand said I had to use the card that came with the machine and I had to commit to a new 12 month plan. And that they would have to cancel my old subscription and start a new one, but couldn't give me a solid answer on any penalties I would have to pay since they are cancelling my old subscription.

From my experience of changing equipment its the card that matters, they don't care about the machine. I've used my brother's reciever and they didn't force upon me a new 12 months.

I think directv needs to start selling upgrade recievers without cards. Some people like me like to upgrade to better like the HDTV but I'm not willing to commit to another 12 months atleast with the current hdtv channels they have. LIke right now would the perfect time to try out HDTV, its football season, if the game quality is that much better then I might agree for another year.

blah.
