Donation of low-end computer for charitable foundation

I am posting for a friend of mine who runs the R. Gene Smith Charitable Foundation in Louisville, KY. The foundation was created to help inner city children make it through school- part of that via financial help and providing computers for the kids. Over the years, many of the kids have sadly dropped out but a few still remain. Unfortunately, the person who funded the program has recently gone bankrupt, and to make matters worse he is in the hospital with an aneurism and is not expected to live very much longer.

One of the few kids remaining in the program is in need of a computer to use for school, and the foundation has no money left. I am posting this to see if anyone would be willing to donate a computer (preferably a laptop for shipping convenience) to the foundation. It only needs to be fast enough for basic word processing and Internet use at minimum. I am thinking around 200 mhz minimum, with 64-128 megs of RAM. Anything faster is a bonus. Again, a laptop would be nice, since it would be much easier to ship and would include a display. Her prior machine was a Dell Latitude Celeron 466 mhz that has done a fine job over the years, but the motherboard recently went bad.

I can provide contact information for the foundation if necessary. Any donations should be able to be written off on taxes, although I would have to double-check on that since I am not an expert in that area.

If anyone is interested in donating a laptop for this cause that meets these specs (they only need one), please let me know.

I would also be willing to work out a trade for the current broken laptop. It starts up but will not get beyond POST. I believe the CMOS/BIOS chip is defective.

Thanks!

there have been problems with these donation type threads in the past, so you might want to take this up with the mods.

I understand that there have been scams in the past. I am only asking for a single, older computer as opposed to anything remotely modern. I can and will provide full contact information for the person running the organization to prove its legitimacy. I posted a thread in "Off Topic" and it was received with a warm response. If any moderators disapprove, then I apologize and the thread can be deleted at their discretion.

That would be cool. If I find someone willing to donate a laptop, then no donation money will be necessary. However, if someone would accept a small paypal donation from you (or if someone else wants to pitch in as well) in exchange for donating the laptop, then perhaps that would work out?
