I was looking for some good ideas for donations. I know there are lots of good foundations but was wondering if there where any more down home type ideas. I remember a couple years ago there was a request put on here for donations for a kid (I think he had MS) who had his xbox stolen. Everyone pitched in and he ended up getting a bunch of games/xbox/tv. I'd much rather do that than dump into the huge redcross fund or something like that.

Child's Play and Toys for Tots are the best (inter)national ones for giving specific gifts instead of money. If you didn't read the mass of text in the Child's Play thread you don't give money to me or them, you shop gift registries set up by the children's hospitals at Amazon.com and the toys go directly to the hospital.

You don't get to know the names of the kids who get to use your toy or book, but you also don't get caught by some scam, or give to someone that already has enough.

Another idea:
Food banks are hurting this year, donations are down and the number of people needing help is up. Here in Washington state we have a charity that helps supply all the food banks in the state, there may be a similar charity in your state.

Dave...thanks for the ideas. I did read your child's play thread and plan on giving later today. I'll look up stuff for the food bank as well.

I would recommend keeping your donations local. food bank, children's shelters, etc..
